We are about to start VALORANT Season 2025, and Riot Games Studio Head Anna Donlon reflects on a journey defined by evolution, community, and ambition. Season 2025 is not just another milestone—it’s a celebration of the game’s vibrant relationship with its global fanbase.

Looking Back: Highlights of 2024

2024 was a landmark year for VALORANT, with the introdution of two new agents, Clove and Vyse, map pool expansion with Abyss and the long-anticipated debut on consoles.

The competitive scene also reached new heights, with unforgettable moments like the VALORANT Champions Seoul Grand Final between EDG and Team Heretics and the Game Changers rise in stature, crowning another champion.

Beyond gameplay, VALORANT explored its narrative universe through Arcane, and fan-favorite updates like the TDM map addition and new cosmetics delighting the community.

VALORANT Season 2025: The Five-Year Anniversary

This year, Riot celebrates five years of VALORANT with a focus on gratitude and celebration. Anna Donlon highlighted the game’s humble beginnings, launched amidst a global pandemic, and how it evolved into a cultural phenomenon. As the game’s story intertwines with its community, Riot plans to mark this anniversary with in-game gifts, events, and curated moments throughout 2025.

A Shift to Seasons

In a significant structural change, Riot is retiring the “episode” format in favor of “seasons.” Season 2025—or V25 for brevity—introduces six acts, maintaining familiar gameplay rhythms such as ranked cycles, battle passes, premier stages, and map rotations. This shift aims to align VALORANT’s content cadence with the evolving demands of its esports calendar, including the newly scheduled Champions event in October.

Community-Centric Gameplay Updates

Acknowledging community feedback, Riot is doubling down on delivering features that players have long requested. Among the highlights:

  • Replays: A long-awaited tool for players and teams to analyze gameplay.
  • Ranked Rollbacks: Adjustments to ensure fairness in competitive play.
  • Cheater Mitigation: Enhanced anti-cheat measures to combat disruptive behavior.
  • Matchmaking Improvements: Refinements to improve queue quality and player experience.
  • Bug Fixes: Addressing both longstanding and new issues, such as Jett’s blinding smoke bug.

Additionally, VALORANT Mobile’s development is gaining traction, with more details promised in the coming months.

Expanding the VALORANT Universe

Narrative storytelling takes center stage in 2025. Riot plans to immerse players deeper into the VALORANT universe through agent voice lines, map updates, cinematics, and hidden lore elements. The year will explore a cohesive story that unfolds across various platforms, offering fans new ways to connect with their favorite characters and settings.

A Commitment to Esports Excellence

VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) 2025 promises another thrilling season. Riot’s investment in the competitive scene—from roster changes to in-person fan events—underscores its dedication to building a world-class esport. Anna Donlon expressed excitement for upcoming events in Bangkok, Toronto, and Paris, encouraging fans to join the celebration in person or online.

The Journey Ahead

Season 2025 is more than a milestone; it’s a launchpad for the next chapter of VALORANT. With a renewed focus on community-driven updates, esports innovation, and narrative expansion, Riot Games is setting the stage for another incredible year. As Anna Donlon eloquently put it, “VALORANT’s fifth year is dedicated to all of you, to your stories, and to celebrating this community.”
