The fourth and final season of Rainbow Six Siege Year 9, Operation Collision Point, brings sweeping changes to gameplay, balance, and player experience. Ubisoft has packed this update with major enhancements, including cross-play, reworked operators, a revamped shield system, and more. Let’s dive into the key highlights of this ambitious season:

Blackbeard Remastered: A New Era for the Point Man

Once a dominant force, Blackbeard had since faded into the background due to balance issues. Operation Collision Point revives this operator with a complete remaster, making him the definitive point man for aggressive plays.

New Adaptive Shield Gadget

The hallmark of Blackbeard’s redesign is his adaptive shield, a dynamic tool that transforms his role on the battlefield. The shield now operates as a deployable glass panel that slides down when aiming down sights, providing chest-level protection while leaving the head exposed.

  • Combat-Ready Flexibility: When aiming, Blackbeard gains frontal protection but remains vulnerable to headshots, ensuring balanced gameplay.
  • Dynamic Soft Wall Breaching: Blackbeard can now burst through soft walls, opening new tactical opportunities for his team.
  • Revitalized Rappel Play: He retains his ability to dominate rappel angles, but with the added balance of exposing himself when he becomes lethal.

Key Gameplay Adjustments

  • No Safe Reloading: Reloading now requires finding cover, adding strategic depth.
  • Custom Animations and Models: Blackbeard’s remaster features completely redesigned visuals and animations.

By giving Blackbeard the tools to lead the charge without making him invincible, Ubisoft has reintroduced him as an alternative to shield operators for aggressive teams.

Shield Mechanics Overhaul: Balance Restored

Speaking of shields, they have long been a contentious feature in Siege. The Operation Collision Point update reworks shield mechanics to address concerns about their aggressive dominance while enhancing counterplay options.

Key Changes to Shields

  • Improved Guard Break Mechanics
    • Melee strikes against shields now stack in intensity, allowing attackers to break through extended shields more effectively.
    • Consecutive strikes now escalate in impact, ensuring a well-coordinated melee can crack even the toughest defenses.
  • Suppression Updates
    • Reduced Suppression Threshold: Suppression effects now trigger after 5 bullets (down from 10) and reach maximum intensity at 20 bullets (down from 40).
    • Extended Suppression Duration: Suppression lasts for up to 7 seconds when no additional damage is dealt, making it a powerful tool for keeping shield operators at bay.
  • Damage Adjustments
    • Shield bash damage has been reduced from 65 to zero, ensuring shields are tools of defense rather than offense.
    • Improved collision detection eliminates frustrating moments when shield bashes would hit unexpectedly.

Core Philosophy: Risk vs. Reward

Ubisoft aims to ensure that being lethal also means being vulnerable. Shield operators must now carefully weigh their choices between aggression and defense, aligning with Siege's strategic principles.

Other Operator Changes:

  • Ying: Candela grenades will now detonate after a short period after throwing fully cooked. Thus making them easier to counter.
  • Sens: Their light walls can now toggle visibility on and off, adding versatility and strategy.

Cross-Play and Cross-Progression Finally Arrive

The most notable feature of Operation Collision Point is the long-awaited introduction of cross-play. Players on PC and consoles can now join the same lobbies, form squads, and compete together. This feature comes with robust options, allowing console players to select from platform-specific, console-only, or PC-inclusive matchmaking pools.

To maintain fairness, Mousetrap V2 has been introduced. It identifies players using keyboard and mouse in console pools, enforcing a three-strike penalty system that relocates offenders to the PC pool for 90 days. Additionally, console players in PC pools will be indistinguishable from their PC counterparts.

Strengthened Player Protection Systems

Ubisoft doubles down on combating toxicity and cheating:

  • Enhanced Reputation System
    • The Reputation System now tracks positive and negative behaviors using "Units" across 100 matches or 90 days. Players can view their standing on a new visualization map.
    • Reputation scores will reset at the season’s start, giving all players a fresh start.
  • Automated Text Chat Moderation
    • Messages deemed disruptive will be flagged or blocked in real-time. Repeated offenses result in match-specific or long-term muting penalties.
  • Cheat Match Cancellation
    • If a cheater is detected mid-game and banned, the match will automatically cancel, ensuring no penalties for legitimate players.

Siege Cup:

The highly competitive Siege Cup mode, previously in beta, is now available to all players above clearance level 50, including those on consoles.

  • Extended Rounds: Matches have eight rounds instead of six, with role swaps after four rounds.
  • Map Selection: Pre-determined maps allow teams to strategize in advance.
  • Phantom Player Algorithm: Accounts for skill disparities in teams, ensuring balanced matchmaking.
