The group stage of IEM Rio 2024 concluded with more surprises than initially anticipated. FaZe Clan, G2 Esports and Eternal Fire are some of the notable names that didn’t make the cut to reach playoffs with mediocre performances against relatively easier opponents.

On the flip side, FURIA Esports and Heroic raised the bar by destroying the favorites in this event, netting them a spot in the semifinals. The Brazilians unexpectedly swept FaZe, MOUZ and Natus Vincere convincingly while Heroic dismantled G2, Astralis and Team Vitality.

These surprising results have thrown predictions out the window, setting up a highly unpredictable playoff stage. So, can NAVI overcome Virtus.Pro and aim for another grand final appearance, or will the Russian squad keep the surprise trend and make yet another upset?

Virtus.Pro road to playoffs

Virtus.Pro is a tricky team to assess, especially after bringing in Denis "electroNic" Sharipov, who was expected to help them find success. However, their performance this season has not been as strong as last year's.

Without a title win so far this year, Dzhami "Jame" Ali faces a tough challenge against NAVI, especially with roster changes looming after the major. While the team deserves credit for making it to the playoffs, they had a relatively easy path, facing teams like 9z, Astralis, and The MongolZ, all of whom have had their own struggles.

At first glance, it might look like Virtus.Pro is destined for defeat. However, a closer inspection of the stats from IEM Rio 2024 shows that NAVI is actually in worse shape, with some of the lowest numbers among the top 10 teams in the tournament.

This could give Virtus.Pro a genuine chance at an upset, but it will ultimately depend on how well NAVI's players perform.

Struggles Amidst Success

NAVI dominated the current season with three trophy lifts and six total grand final appearances. However, it’s important to note that this is their first event where they reach the playoffs in the low seed after losing the advancement series against Heroic.

NAVI's slight drop in form was evident in their match against Team Liquid, which went the full 24 rounds. While they are still considered favorites, there's some skepticism due to their average performance. Let's dive deeper into the numbers to identify the areas where they are struggling.

For example, NAVI's second-round conversion rate is the lowest in the event at just 55.6%, while Virtus.Pro boasts a rate of 66.7%. They also struggle with multi-kills per round, averaging only 0.70%, placing them near the bottom alongside already eliminated teams like 9z and G2.

While NAVI has one of the highest opening kill ratings, they haven't been able to capitalize on it. Their 5v4 win rate stands at 71%, compared to nearly 80% for Virtus.Pro. As for trading kills, NAVI isn’t doing well there either, with a 4v5 conversion rate of only 25%.

So, can NAVI still win despite their ineffective trading, weak firepower, and low round conversion rates? Yes, they can.

Prediction: A 2v1 thriller for NAVI

Despite the saying "Let the numbers guide you, not your emotions," Counter-Strike is different. Even with poor stats, teams can find extra motivation in the playoffs when playing in front of a crowd.

Virtus.Pro has every right to take the win based on their stats, but NAVI as a team is a different beast on stage with every individual player having the ability to single handedly win games. For that, we expect an action-packed series with a close scoreline in favor of Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen’s men reaching the semifinals where they’ll face Heroic, in an attempt to avenge their Upper Bracket Final loss.

CS2 Major Revenue Share Changes Are Pushing Organizations Away from Counter-Strike

Valve’s new CS2 Major revenue share ties sticker income to VRS and final placement, removing capsule‑style payouts and concentrating money among top finishers. The result: higher volatility for clubs that relied on sticker cheques, early roster cuts like Gaimin Gladiators, and a narrower field of sustainable CS2 organizations unless the payout model changes.
