Kez is here! The newest hero in Dota 2, and the community has been buzzing with excitement and confusion. Designed as a high-skill-cap melee agility hero with 2 weapon layouts, he's been making waves in pubs.

With a win rate hovering at a rough 37% in pub matches, Kez has officially joined the list of new heroes who struggle out of the gate. Is the hero undertuned or are players just struggling to figure out how this complex hero works?

Kez: Complexity Meets Opportunity

Kez is a unique addition to the roster, combining two distinct forms: a high-damage bruiser and a swift, elusive assassin that reminds of Nomad - a HoN hero. Both forms come with separate ability sets, making Kez one of the more complex heroes Dota 2 has ever introduced.

While this design opens up exciting possibilities for high-level play, it comes with a steep learning curve for even the most seasoned pub player. Either way, the Dota 2 players are rushing to first pick the hero every game.

Low Win Rate On Release: Not As Common As You Would Think.

At launch, Kez’s win rate stands at a grim 37% (and even lower in matches above 8000 mmr!), putting them firmly in the “hard-to-master” category. And while some argue that this is mostly due to his high skill cap and people figuring out how the hero works, it's actually more common for newly released heroes to be among the stronger heroes in the game.

This is a common technique in game design to make sure you get enough data to properly balance the hero for the long run. An example of this is Ringmaster, the second newest hero in Dota, who dominated the pub scene for weeks before getting nerfed into a reasonable place.

The Road Ahead

Kez’s release has sparked mixed reactions, ranging from awe at their potential to frustration over their current difficulty. While it’s too early to declare whether Kez will become a first-pick staple or fade into obscurity without tweaks, one thing is clear: mastering this hero will take time.

The next few patches will likely address the hero’s glaring weaknesses, giving players a chance to explore Kez’s true potential. Expect to see a lot of misplays and bird memes until then.

What do you think about Kez? Are they a future meta-wrecker in the making, or a hero destined for the “too difficult” pile? Keep your eyes on this website, as we'll be sure to update you on how the pros are making this hero work!
