The Esports World Cup Foundation announced today the launch of Road to EWC, a global campaign centered on the player and Club journeys.

“The global initiative will spotlight the diverse paths players take to qualify for the EWC, celebrating the passion, rivalries, and competitive spirit that connect global audiences to the world’s largest esports event.”

Building Up to the Esports World Cup

Set to run from May until August, Road to EWC will be more, well, a road through. With the Esports World Cup 2025 kicking off on July 7th and running until August 28th, the campaign will document the highs and lows of its contestants all the way from the qualifiers to the trophy.

The campaign is reported to include a mixture of content for fans of the EWC to enjoy, such as:

  • Content from select qualifier events
  • Player interviews
  • BTS stories
  • Tournament explainers
  • Game explainers

“Road to EWC is a tribute to every player, Club, and community whose journey defines the spirit of competition. It’s about those who lift the trophy in Riyadh, and those who give everything to reach it. It’s about the thousands of players whose dreams, rivalries, and stores make the Esports World Cup the ultimate global competition.”

– Faisal Bin Homran, Chief Product Officer

Rise Above

The campaign narrative is aptly named for the emerging esports Mecca, which is now entering its second year and iteration. Despite delivering a momentous tournament last year, the EWC seeks to surpass itself in 2025 with over 2000 players and 200 Clubs from more than 100 countries, while 25 tournaments spanning 24 games are played for a $70+ million prize pool.

A Revolution for Esports

Before the Esports World Cup, it was rare to see a collection of esports titles on this scale. Perhaps the EWC model has provided us with more than just a tournament – perhaps it’s the next revolution for gaming as a whole.

League of Legends Player Count and Statistics (2025)

Released in 2009, League of Legends remains as one, if not the most popular games in the world. While Riot Games have not published a player count or viewership reports, third party sources indicate ~110 million players login into their League of Legends account monthly. These paired with the 6.78M peak viewership (excluding China) of Worlds 2025, the Riot Games’ first offering continues to dominate competitive gaming.
