Operation Deadbolt is a major Zombies mode featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. It builds on the Dark Aether Saga first seen in Black Ops Cold War and takes place more than 35 years after the events of Forsaken. This guide explains how the mode works, how the map functions, and what players face as they move deeper into the Exclusion Zone.

What is Operation Deadbolt?

Operation Deadbolt is set across a large open map in Zaravan, Urzikstan. Players enter as members of a strike team operating inside an area filled with undead threats, mercenaries, and Aether-based anomalies. Each match focuses on exploring the map, completing contracts, gathering useful items, and reaching an exfil site before the Aether Storm overtakes the area.

How the Threat Tiers Work

The map is divided into three threat levels. Players start on the outskirts in Tier I and naturally progress inward if they choose.

Tier I — Low Threat

This area is safer and meant for early-game contracts and gathering basic gear.

Tier II — Medium Threat

Enemies become stronger. Contracts reward better loot and players begin finding higher-value items.

Tier III — High Threat

This zone contains elite enemies, stronger mercenaries, and access to late-game systems such as Dark Aether Rifts. It also carries the highest contract rewards.

How Contracts Work

Contracts are the main way to earn essence, loot, and Reward Rifts. The map offers several types, each with a specific task.

  • Aether Extractor: Destroy rockets used to extract Aetherium. Higher tiers add more rockets.

  • Deliver Cargo: Steal a Terminus Outcomes LTV and deliver it to a pickup point while avoiding a helicopter.

  • Defend Ground Station: Gather seismic data and defend a server until the upload finishes.

  • Eliminate the Bounty: Track down and kill a High Value Target such as a Mimic, Mangler, Disciple, or Mega Abomination.

  • Escort: Protect an Aether Containment Vehicle while it gathers Aetherium.

  • Outlast: Reactivate a Phase Neutralization Device and survive until the analysis completes.

  • Raid Weapon Stash: Break into a Terminus safe while fighting off zombies.

  • Spore Control: Destroy Dark Aether Spores using Inhibitors found nearby.

Reward Rifts

Completing a contract spawns a Reward Rift containing randomized loot. Some items can be saved and carried into future matches if brought out through exfil.

Activities Across the Map

Activities are smaller objectives that grant loot but not a Reward Rift. They resemble world events from Cold War Outbreak. They vary in difficulty and often match the tier they appear in.

Aether Nests

Filled with cysts, toxic gas, and Nest Crawlers.

Harvester Orbs

Floating orbs that jitter around when shot and drop essence, weapons, or an Aether Tool.

Infested Strongholds

Large zones with cysts, armored zombies, and Mimics disguised as chests.

Mercenary Camps

Guarded by Terminus enemies and a Counter-UAV drone. Clearing a camp drops loot and a Stronghold keycard.

Armored Convoys

Three trucks patrolling together. The lead Sergeant always drops a keycard.

Mercenary Strongholds

Larger fortified areas requiring a keycard to enter. Clearing them rewards better gear and a Warlord Fortress keycard.

Warlord Fortress

A major stronghold run by a Warlord such as Legacy Baranov, Dokkaebi, Keres, or Rainmaker. Defeating the Warlord opens a Reward Rift with a blueprint and a Wonder Weapon case.

The Aether Storm and Match Timer

The Aether Storm is a deadly zone that appears at random. It damages players unless they use a Gas Mask. Players have around 45 minutes to move through the map before the Storm expands. Once it spreads, a 15-minute countdown begins. Reaching an exfil site before the Storm consumes the map is the only way to keep your gear.

High Value Items and the Acquisitions Stash

Items such as Aether Tools and Perk Cans can be stowed and extracted. Players can store up to 11 High Value Items in their Acquisitions Stash, allowing them to bring these items into future matches.

Story Missions and Acts

Operation Deadbolt uses a structured story, told in four Acts. Completing missions unlocks Perk Power-Ups and other rewards such as Schematics and Acquisitions.

Act I — Welcome to Operation Deadbolt

Introduces new recruits and reveals Terminus Outcomes’ plans.

Act II — Mother of Invention

Focuses on Dr. Ava Jansen’s defection and her Aether-based device.

Act III — Confrontation

Zakhaev and Fletcher fight to stop Deadbolt from using Jansen’s technology.

Act IV — Contact

The situation worsens as Operation Deadbolt tries to contain the growing threat in the Exclusion Zone.

Each Act ends with a unique mission in a separate area with its own timer and objectives.

Dark Aether Rifts

Dark Aether Rifts are end-game challenges unlocked after certain story steps. Each Rift requires four relics placed on altars. A boss spawns and drops a Sigil, allowing entry into the Rift. Inside, players must complete three contracts before exfil.

Rift #1 — Opal Palace Island

Based on Al Bagra Fortress. Contracts include Aether Extractor, Outlast, and Escort.

Rift #2 — Nahr Bathhouse

Based on Sa’id City. Contracts include Aether Extractor, Outlast, and Bounty.

Rift #3 — Old Town

Based on Zarqwa Hydroelectric. Contracts include Bounty, Outlast, and Escort.

Rift #4 — Opal Palace

Located in the center of the palace. Includes Outlast, Spore Control, and Escort. This Rift also offers a side easter egg and a boss fight against the Entity’s Echo.

Unstable Rift

The Unstable Rift appears once players activate three obelisks through specific ammo-mod kills. Only the first team to enter gets access. Inside, players face five phases of bosses. Weapons are upgraded to Tier III and perked automatically. Completing it grants the “Mark of the Survivor” camo and resets cooldowns for insured slots and schematics.

Containment Levels

Containment Levels are an exfil streak system that gives match-start bonuses. Players gain points by completing contracts, with higher-tier zones granting more points. Exfils are required to rank up, and failing an exfil drops the player one tier.

Strike Team Slots

Players can create multiple Strike Team Operators. Additional slots come from specific bundles, such as Aether Worm or Demon Glo.

Final Thoughts

Operation Deadbolt gives COD Zombies players a large space to explore and a system that rewards steady progress. Each zone, contract, Rift, and story mission adds to the sense of moving toward something bigger than a single match. Its layered structure helps players take on challenges at their own pace while building a stash that follows them from match to match.
