Ludvig Maxis is one of the most important characters in the Call of Duty Zombies storyline. He was a brilliant scientist, the leader of Group 935, and the father of Samantha Maxis. His experiments with Element 115 led to the creation of Zombies, Hellhounds, and the technology that fueled the entire saga. Over time, Maxis shifted roles, moving from antagonist to reluctant guide, shaping the fate of the survivors across multiple timelines.

Early Life and Role in Group 935

Maxis was the head of Group 935, a secret German organization focused on advanced weapons research during World War II. The group worked on teleporters, experimental energy sources, and bioweapons. Maxis became deeply involved with Edward Richtofen, his assistant, though their relationship would later collapse.

At the research facility Der Riese, Maxis oversaw experiments that would eventually lead to disaster. His personal life also complicated matters. He was distracted by his feelings for Sophia, which Richtofen used as evidence that Maxis was unfit to lead.

Creation of Zombies and Hellhounds

Group 935’s work with Element 115 had dire consequences. Zombies were created during the experiments, and Hellhounds were born after a failed teleportation test involving Samantha’s dog, Fluffy.

When the dog returned as the first Hellhound, Samantha confronted her father. Richtofen betrayed Maxis by locking him and Samantha inside the room with the beast before activating the teleporter. This event changed everything for both father and daughter.

Richtofen’s Betrayal and Aftermath

After being teleported, Maxis found himself in another realm. He merged his soul with technology, becoming a disembodied intelligence. Samantha, meanwhile, was trapped in the MPD on the Moon.

When reunited with his daughter, Maxis told her to take revenge on Group 935. He later took his own life, allowing his consciousness to survive as an AI. From then on, he began guiding events from the shadows.

Maxis Against Richtofen’s Plan

When Richtofen entered the Aether, Maxis fought back. He used survivors such as Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki, and Samantha to launch missiles at Earth. The plan was meant to sever Richtofen’s connection to the Aether, but it caused global devastation.

Maxis then turned to another plan, using global polarization devices to overpower Richtofen. Survivors like Misty, Russman, Marlton, and Stuhlinger carried out his orders, though his true goal was not healing the Earth but reaching Agartha, where he believed Samantha was waiting.

The Rift and the Canon Ending

Maxis eventually manipulated events to open the Rift. If players followed his path in the Easter Eggs, Maxis would overpower Richtofen, destroy Earth, and open the gateway to Agartha. He was reunited with Samantha but at the cost of humanity. This version of Maxis became corrupted and was eventually erased by Doctor Monty.

Dimension 63 and the Drone Form

In an alternate timeline, Maxis worked at Heidelberg University, where Richtofen had been his student. After being consumed by Element 115, Richtofen preserved Maxis’s brain inside a quadrotor drone.

In this form, Maxis guided the Primis crew during Origins, helping them fight the undead and open a portal to free Samantha. He then entered Agartha, where Monty restored his body and erased his corrupted version.

Alternate Timelines and Fractures

The story of Ludvig Maxis spread across many fractured timelines.

  • Empty Earth: Maxis discovered a dimension unstable to sustain life, using it to store artifacts.

  • Deceptio Fracture: The Primis crew lit a beacon, receiving a response from Maxis promising to reunite with them.

  • Agonia Fracture: Maxis preserved Sophia’s consciousness inside a drone named S.O.P.H.I.A.

Each version showed a different side of Maxis, but they all reflected his obsession with Samantha and the consequences of his experiments.

The House and Monty’s Influence

Maxis spent time in the House within Agartha, reunited with Samantha and Sophia. His curiosity with the Summoning Key, however, caused him to become trapped inside it. This mistake released the Shadowman, bringing chaos until Primis defeated him.

Even then, Maxis played a role in saving the universe by working with Sophia to absorb the souls of children and remove the Apothicon threat.

Nikolai’s Grand Scheme and Final Fate

In his final known appearance, Maxis warned the crews that Doctor Monty was aware of their actions. Before his death at Monty’s hands, he teleported Samantha and Eddie to safety at Camp Edward. His last act was to protect his daughter, showing that his story had always been about her survival.
