Pugna is a spell-based hero in Dota 2 known for punishing enemies who rely on abilities. He drains health, destroys mana-based heroes, and pushes lanes quickly. His kit is built around control and high magical damage.

This guide covers how Pugna works, how to use his abilities, what items to buy, and how to play him effectively in a match.

Pugna: Lore and Backstory

Pugna is a powerful undead caster from the Nether Reaches. Raised in a temple devoted to nether magic, he showed magical talent from a young age. At just 13 months old, he claimed his place as the reincarnation of a powerful grandmaster by destroying his rivals with emerald fire.

Oblivion Savant (Innate)

Pugna can cast spells and use items while channeling. He also receives compounding permanent spell amplification per destroyed tower.

Nether Blast

Nether Blast deals magic damage in an area. It damages both units and buildings, making it useful for wave clearing and pushing. The blast has a short delay before it hits, so you need to time it right.

It's Pugna’s primary damage source. Combined with other abilities, it melts squishy heroes quickly. It becomes more dangerous as the game progresses, especially with spell damage items or talents.

Decrepify

This spell disables a unit by turning it ethereal. Ethereal units can’t attack or be attacked with physical damage. They also take more magic damage.

Casting this on enemies before using Nether Blast boosts your burst damage. On allies, it protects them from right-clicks and increases healing effects like Life Drain. It also slows enemies, which helps chase or escape.

Decrepify is flexible. You can use it to save allies, start a kill, or disable a carry trying to deal damage.

Nether Ward

Pugna places a ward that damages any enemy hero who casts a spell nearby. The damage is based on the mana cost of the spell. This makes it deadly against heroes who rely on frequent casting.

The ward can turn teamfights around by punishing enemies who spam spells. Place it before fights or near objectives. It works best when placed out of reach but still within its large radius.

Life Drain

Life Drain channels a beam that drains health from an enemy and restores Pugna’s. It can also be cast on allies to heal them by sacrificing his own HP.

This is Pugna’s core sustain tool. During fights, you can stay alive by draining life from an enemy. With proper positioning and protection, Pugna can survive longer than expected. Life Drain also provides vision on the target enemy unit.

Aghanim Upgrades

Nether Ward

Improved by purchasing Aghanim's Shard. Increases cast range. When Life Drain is cast on the ward now, the magic refracts to enemy heroes within the radius and leeches their health for a portion of the damage.

Life Drain

Improved by purchasing Aghanim's Scepter. Now applies a debuff that reduces the affected enemy hero's outgoing spell damage while channeling Life Drain. While channeling, Life Drain periodically also grants Pugna outgoing spell damage amplification per affected hero.

Level 10 introduces a choice between increasing Nether Ward's durability or reducing its cooldown. When hitting level 15, choose between additional health for Pugna or give Decrepify a speed bonus component for ally casts.

Level 20 offers a choice between increased Decrepify duration or improved Life Drain healing. Lastly, hitting level 20 unlocks the choice between improved Nether Ward or Nether Blast damage.

Early Game

Use Nether Blast to farm and pressure towers. Zone enemies with Decrepify and place your Nether Ward in fights or near runes. Always manage your mana. Use Life Drain on creeps to sustain when safe.

Mid Game

Start joining fights. Place Nether Ward before casting spells. Catch enemies with Decrepify and follow up with Nether Blast and Life Drain. Stay behind allies and use your cast range to avoid danger.

Late Game

You become a high-priority target. Use Decrepify on yourself or allies during dives. With Aghanim's upgrades, keep draining life or mana from enemies. Be careful with positioning. One silence or stun can stop your combo.

When to Pick Pugna

Pugna is strong against heroes who spam spells, rely on healing, or deal only physical damage. He struggles against silences, burst disables, and heroes with high mobility.

Pick him when you need a tower pusher, anti-mage support, or a magic damage nuker.

Final Thoughts

Pugna can control fights with high damage and strong utility. When played correctly, he turns enemy spells against them and drains them dry. Mastering his spell timing and positioning in Dota 2 is key to using his full potential.
