Broodmother is a hero in Dota 2 that overwhelms her prey with crowd control and numerous spider children. Her biggest threat comes from her incredibly fast tempo, suffocating in her early-game strength. Check out our guide on Broodmother for abilities, talents, best build, strategies, and lore.

Broodmother: Lore and Bacsktory

Black Arachnia the Broodmother spent centuries beneath Mount Pyrotheos, raising millions of spiderlings in lava-carved tunnels. In a later age, the Vizier of Greed, Ptholopthales erected his lodestone ziggurate on the slope of the volcano, knowing that Black Arachnia's fearsome brood would serve as a powerful deterrent

After a long period of peave, Black Arachnia now found a steady trickle of intruders to her nest—nothing she couldn't happen—but still not the most ideal place of nurture for her offspring. Tiring of the intrusions, she went to Ptholopthales to discuss a compromise. When the Vizier refused to assist, Black Arachnia wrapped him in silk and ate him.

Unfortunately, the death of the Vizier only served to embolden the intruders, who came in greater droves. At the end of her patience, Black Arachnia now resolves to rid the world of every possible invader until her nursery was once more a safe and nurturing environment for her offspring.

Broodmother: Ability Breakdown

Spider's Milk (Innate)

Whenever Broodmother kills a unit, she and all units under her control in the area receives a buff that heals them for a portion of the health damaged.

Insatiable Hunger

Insatiable Hunger increases Broodmother's and her spiderlings attack damage and gives them lifesteal.

Spin Web

Spin Web webs up a large target area, granting Broodmother passive movement speed increase, increased Turn Rate, and free movement within the area. Spin Web can be cast from anywhere as long as it touches an existing 'web' and is permanent until destroyed or replaced. The 'web' can be manually destroyed and a maximum number of 'webs' can exist on the map at any time. Placing a new Spin Web replaces the oldest 'web'. The maximum number increases with level up to 9 concurrent webs.

Incapacitating Bite

Incapacitating Bite is a passive that cripples enemy units, causing Broodmother's attacks to slow and give the affected unit a chance to miss its attacks and take extra damage from attacks.

Spawn Spiderlings

Spawn Spiderlings injects an enemy unit with Broodmother's young, dealing damage and slowing them. If the target is kill while the effect of Spawn Spiderlings is still active, spiderlings will hatch from the corpse. Spiderlings last 40 seconds and are full controllable and in turn lay eggs under affected enemy's skins. On enemy death, more spiderlings emerge.

Aghanim Upgrades

Insatiable Hunger

Improved by purchasing Aghanim's Shard. While Insatiable Hunger is active, the bonus damage increases ever second.

Spinner’s Snare

Unlocked by purchasing Aghanim's Scepter. Broodmother can now place invisible web lines touching any existing Spin Web webs. Enemy heroes that cross the web line with be rooted, revealed in fog and take damage over time. Multiple heroes can be rooted by the same web line until it is destroyed. Broodmother's team is alerted on the minimap when an enemy triggers a snare.

At level 10, players are presented with a choice of either improved Insatiable Hunger lifesteal or increased spiderling damage. Level 15 brings bonus durability for spiderlings by way of more health or increased Incapacitating Bite bonus damage. At level 20, choose between increased Incapacitating Bite 'miss' chance or reduced Spin Web recharge time. Finally, at level 25, choose between increased Spin Web move speed or reduction in base attack time during Insatiable Hunger.

For skills, open with Spin Web and alternate it with Spawn Spiderlings until both reach max rank. Grab Insatiable Hunger at six, then leave further points until webs and spiderlings are finished. Early farm flows from spider production, not from self-buffed right-clicks.

Gameplay Strategy

Broodmother is an incredibly mobile hero that can function as a Carry and Nuker but excels as a Pusher and fringe fighter thanks to the pressure from her attack buffs and spiderlings. Smartly positioned Broodmothers are also difficult to punish once she gains access to Spinner's Snare.

Laning Phase

Place two webs at the first wave so one covers the creeps and a nearby small camp. Stay within silk where possible, because outside the network Broodmother walks at creep-speed. Cast Spawn Spiderlings on ranged creeps or poked opponents just before they die; the resulting spiderlings double as harassment and farming tools. Target ranged or low-armor heroes first because melee cores routinely carry damage block that blunts spider damage.

Mid-Game Map Control

Once the five-minute catapult wave hits, all the spiders-plus-siege damage melts the Tier 1. Afterward extend webs through the enemy jungle. Farming camps between waves denies opponents gold while boosting your own. Keep at least one spare web charge so you can leap gaps during a chase. Destroy an obsolete web before placing a fresh one if you fear losing an anchor section.

Team Fighting

Broodmother prefers skirmishes to full five-on-five clashes. She enters from flank angles, toggles Insatiable Hunger, and lifesteals through retaliation. If a drawn-out fight looms, use Spinner’s Snare first; the rooted enemy can neither blink nor smoke, buying time for allies to arrive. When enemies group around area spells, pull back and push a side lane instead.

Closing the Game

Your advantage peaks when spiderlings survive basic wave-clear. Gather allies after you take outer towers, then threaten high ground before opponents complete their own area items. Should they pick up Maelstrom, Dagon, or Radiance, shift lanes rather than forcing through fortified defenses. Quick objective trades win far more games than stalled sieges when playing a tempo hero.

Opponents keep her in check by buying early area damage such as Sand King’s Sand Storm or Lina’s Dragon Slave. Sentry wards and Dust reveal Broodmother when she slips behind trees or dives under towers. Strong wave-clear cores like Ember Spirit and Legion Commander reclaim farm even within webs. Crimson Guard absorbs the spider swarm’s hits during building defenses.

Practical Tips

Web connectivity matters. Always overlap new silk with the old so you can recast across distance. Use medallion-induced creep aggro to pull waves into webs for safe farming. Send weaker spiderites first against heroes with big nukes; baiting spells keeps sturdier spiderlings alive. Keep a hotkey group for webs so you see how many sit unused. Lifesteal against neutral creeps mid-fight to refresh health without backing out, and remember that a Medallion on Roshan plus Insatiable Hunger lets you solo the pit early.

Final Thoughts

Broodmother rewards preparation and constant pressure in Dota 2. She secures one slice of the map, out-farms anyone trapped nearby, and ends games before late-game area clears erase her brood. Master web placement, manage your spider groups, and press objectives as soon as the first tower falls. Proper execution turns every lane into fresh feeding ground for the children of Mount Pyrotheos.
