In a significant announcement, Riot Games has introduced a series of major changes to the transfer rules governing the 2024 Valorant Champions Tour (VCT). These changes promise to reshape how player transfers happen in the competitive Valorant scene, with the aim of improving team dynamics, promoting fair play, and addressing some of the issues that plagued the previous seasons.

Extended transfer window

One of the most notable alterations for the 2024 VCT season is the extension of the transfer window. Riot has confirmed that the transfer window will open on September 11 and remain open until July 15 of the following year.

This represents a substantial shift from the 2023 season, where the transfer window closed on February 1, leaving teams with little room to make adjustments after the season commenced.

Additionally, a mid-season transfer window between March 6-25 started in 2023 to allow teams to make changes mid-season. With the extended transfer window, teams will now have the flexibility to adapt their rosters based on how the season unfolds, potentially elevating the overall level of competition and preventing the existence of "dead teams".

Roster Size Regulations

Riot has also made changes to the VCT's roster size regulations for 2024. Teams will now need to maintain a minimum roster of five players, down from six in the previous year. Simultaneously, the reserve roster can now accommodate up to five players, an increase of one player compared to 2023.

The reserve roster is designed for players who do not meet the qualifications to be part of the active roster, including those who fall below the minimum age requirements, players serving suspensions, loaned players, and now, two-way players.

Introduction of Two-Way Players

Perhaps one of the most significant introductions in the 2024 roster construction rules is the inclusion of two-way players. These players will have the eligibility to compete for a VCT team and simultaneously play for a secondary, affiliated team.

VCT teams can roster up to two designated two-way players on their full roster, offering greater flexibility and opportunities for players to gain experience and exposure in competitive Valorant.

Player "Safe Harbor" and Event Locks

To ensure fairness and protection for players, Riot is instituting a "safe harbor" provision. Players released from VCT teams have a 14-day window to find another team, even if they leave their current team outside of the transfer window. This provision applies as long as it does not conflict with the active roster lock of any international competition.

Moreover, the 2024 VCT season will commence on February 1 and conclude on October 7, featuring three global events: VCT Masters Madrid, VCT Masters Shanghai, and Valorant Champions.

During these events, teams can't add players to their active roster or moving players from the reserve roster to the active roster, as each event will have its specific active roster lock period.

Conclusion

In summary, Riot's announcement of the 2024 Valorant Champions Tour transfer rules brings significant changes to the competitive landscape of Valorant.

With an extended transfer window, modified roster size regulations, the introduction of two-way players, and the implementation of a "safe harbor" for players, the 2024 VCT season is poised to offer a more dynamic and competitive experience for players, teams, and fans alike.
