Smells like breakfast.

In the wake of the success of the DSG roster in the North American Valorant Challengers League (VCL), popular streamer/content creator and DSG organization owner Jeremy “Disguised Toast” Wang has unveiled the second stage of his masterplan. On the 27th of April, DSG announced their Game Changers (GC) roster lineup.

The roster is comprised of one established professional Valorant player, and four content creators looking to make their professional Valorant debut. The roster members are as follows:

  • Jodi “QuarterJade” Lee
  • Kyedae “Kyedae” Shymko
  • Sydney “Sydeon” Parker
  • Tenzin “Truly Tenzin” Dolkar
  • Lydia “tupperware” Wilson

“tupperware” formerly played for Immortals and was on the roster for nearly a year. She will be performing the duties of In-Game Leader for this new roster. Moreover, Corey “ruin” Hartog, formerly of Complexity Gaming, NSIC, and Sovereigns, is an experienced former Counter-Strike Global Offensive player and coach that will take on the mantle of coach for this new Game Changers roster.

Another Qualifiers Gauntlet Series

This newly formed Game Changers squad will have their work cut out for them. “Disguised Toast” announced in the same tweet that the roster will be streaming their scrims and practice for the coming week in anticipation of the North American VCT Game Changers Open Qualifiers. The Open Qualifiers is set to begin on the 4th of April, in just under a week’s time.

The format and number of teams for the Open Qualifiers has yet to be confirmed, however, a total of eight teams will proceed to the NA Game Changers main event. Unlike the NA VCL, the tournament will be held as a straightforward double-elimination bracket from the 7th of Mar until the 14th.

Furthermore, should DSG GC make it through the Open Qualifiers gauntlet, they will face of some the toughest current Game Changers roster, including the likes of Version1, Shopify Rebellion GC, and “tupperware’s” former teammates in Immortals.

Premature Criticisms

In the wake of Jeremy’s announcement, DSG and it’s owner has already come under criticism by current Game Changers players and fans of the league with accusations of creating a roster focused on content creation over progressing the scene.

Their signing of four content creators with no background in competitive play lends credence to some of the accusations, most prominent of which comes from Irene “jellyfish”, a current Game Changers free agent who most recently played for Overkill.

In an extensive tweet thread, she addressed her primary concerns for the announcement, stating that ‘as someone who competes in gamechangers primarily and cares about the growth of the scene and its players, it feels disrespectful that dsg originally asks for actual players to build a roster for gamechangers and then builds a team w 4 very popular streamers.’

The original tweet she references is from the 16th of March, where “Disguised Toast” tweeted out his interest in recruiting a Valorant Game Changers player with the intention of building a Game Changers roster.

Response to Criticisms

However, in response, multiple notable figures in the industry have stepped up on both sides of the picket fence on this debate. “Disguised Toast” himself defended the roster in his own extensive tweet chain. Ultimately, the decision of creating a roster primarily for content is a controversial one in the already niche Valorant space that seeks to nurture more female talent with the end-goal of integrating into the predominantly male-dominated main Valorant Champions Tour (VCT).

Furthermore, the largest criticism comes in the form of why it appears "Disguised Toast" took the 'recruitment' of his original DSG roster so 'seriously', whereas this roster felt put together with far less effort.
