The League of Legends Esports World Cup 2025 is in full effect. Despite the short format (the event only runs for a total of five days), the tournament has served to reinforce an old truth of the game: the East rules competitive League of Legends.

Just like at MSI, Western teams have struggled to get past their Asian counterparts in the Knockout Stage of the EWC. This time, however, G2 Esports remains the single beacon of hope left standing at the tournament.

The West Struggles Once More

At MSI 2025, just weeks ago, the West failed to get a single team past the first round of bracket games. Now, history came very close to repeating itself at the EWC. That is, if not for G2.

The European squad took down Bilibili Gaming (BLG) in their opening game of the playoffs by playing to their strengths and refusing to shy away from the challenge. Though FlyQuest and Movistar KOI tried to do the same, the two LCK powerhouses of Gen.G and T1 simply proved too much for them in the end, leaving G2 to hold the fort on their own. The question now is, how far can this G2 squad go?

The Toughest Challenge: Rematch Time

G2 became one of the most disappointing stories of MSI after winning just a single game during the Bracket Stage (1-3 vs Gen.G, 0-3 vs FlyQuest). Now, the team will be hungry to prove they have learned from their mistakes.

Up next, G2 will face none other than the reigning MSI Champions of Gen.G in the Semifinals of the EWC: the very team that started G2's downfall at MSI. For the squad to score revenge, G2 will need to find a way to get past Gen.G's clean and methodical style of play while keeping a cool head in the process.

Can G2 find a way to perform a miracle, or will the EWC serve to remind everyone once more just how far the West still needs to go to compete with some of the best League of Legends teams in the world?
