Esports World Cup 2027 Opens New Qualifier Program for Local Tournaments Worldwide
The Esports World Cup (EWC) is expanding its qualification system for 2027, allowing local tournament organizers, universities, cyber cafés, and gaming venues to host official competitions that could lead players to the international event.
Announced on Monday (October 19), the new EWC Qualifier Program is part of Road to EWC, which aims to reach 1.8 million players through more than 400 events in 2027. Applications are now open to organizers worldwide.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of local qualifiers that feed into the EWC's Last Chance Qualifier tournaments. The new format will initially cover Counter-Strike 2, Street Fighter 6, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, and Chess.
How Will the New EWC 2027 Qualifiers Work?
The program has two formats: EWC Direct Qualifiers, aimed at established tournaments, and EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers, designed for smaller competitions and local gaming communities.
EWC Direct Qualifiers
Existing tournaments can become official EWC qualifiers without giving up their branding or independent operations. Organizers will remain responsible for funding their events and can retain their local commercial partnerships.
To participate, competitions must meet EWC and game publisher requirements, including rulesets, anti-cheat measures, officiating, and verified results.
EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers
The Satellite format is open to a wider range of organizers, including esports federations, universities, cyber cafés, gaming festivals, and local tournament operators.
Approved partners can register existing competitions or create new ones under their own brands, with marketing support from the Esports Foundation.
Winners of Satellite tournaments will earn a guaranteed spot in their game's EWC Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ), not the main Esports World Cup event. They will still need to compete in the LCQ to secure a place in the championship.
The Esports Foundation will provide accommodation and visa support for Satellite winners attending the LCQs in summer 2027.
Which Games Will Have Satellite Qualifiers?
Four games have been confirmed for the initial Satellite Last Chance Qualifier program:
- Counter-Strike 2
- Street Fighter 6
- FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves
- Chess
More titles will be announced later. These four games are the initial lineup for the Satellite program, not the complete Esports World Cup 2027 game list.
The EWC has also yet to confirm which established tournaments will join the Direct Qualifier program or how many qualification spots each event will offer.
Last Chance Qualifiers Have Already Produced EWC Champions
The Last Chance Qualifier system has previously allowed players to reach the Esports World Cup and win titles.
One example is Portuguese EA SPORTS FC player João "jafonsogv" Vasconcelos, who qualified through the LCQ before becoming an EWC champion in 2024.
His run later inspired the Jafonso Award, created to recognize players who win an EWC title after coming through a Last Chance Qualifier.
How to Apply for the EWC 2027 Qualifier Program
Applications for both EWC Direct Qualifiers and Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers close on December 20, 2026. Interested organizers can find more information through the official Esports World Cup website.
All approved qualifying events must conclude by June 1, 2027.
Organizers can also contact the Esports Foundation directly through the following email addresses:
- EWC Direct Qualifiers: EWCDirectQualifier@esportsfoundation.com
- EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers: EWCSatelliteLCQ@esportsfoundation.com
The list of participating tournaments, approved organizers, and available qualification spots will be announced at a later date.
