The Lima Major, the first-ever Major for the 2022-2023 DPC season, will be held in South America. However, the community is worried about the ongoing political situation in Peru as the date for the Major approaches.

The Division I matches are coming to an end as most regions already know which teams will be representing them for the upcoming Major.

The Situation

The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo was impeached and placed in detention for attempting to allegedly dissolve congress. Since then there have been protests and Peru’s new government declared a state of emergency a week after the protests started.

As the tensions heightened, tourist attractions have been closed to the public and it has caused concerns. The situation has been worsening for a month. There have been more than 50 casualties since the protests began and all the sporting events have been canceled.

Reassurance

Despite the ongoing conflicts in the country, the tickets for the Lima Major are expected to sell out. A week ago, the organizers 4D Esports said that “they don’t have any reason to believe that the state of emergency is going to affect the Major”. In a recent podcast, the caster duo of Troels “syndereN” Nielsen and Shannon “SUNSfan” Scotten expressed their concerns regarding the matter.

To address the concerns, 4D Esports stated that they have “alternatives if the situation deteriorates quickly” however they also continued on to say that it is “extremely unlikely”

Although no clarification about the alternatives was given, Valve can make the final decision to cancel the Major if the lives of fans and players will be at risk. With that said, the Lima Major is set to start on 22nd February.
