In a bold shake-up to the European League of Legends competitive scene, the LEC format will undergo significant changes to its 2025 season structure.

The new format will follow the current three-split system—Winter, Spring, and Summer—with each one serving as a direct qualification path for international tournaments. The LEC promises several twists for the upcoming year, however, ranging from new Roadshow events to the introduction of Fearless Draft and more Bo3s.

Here’s everything you need to know about what’s new in the LEC for 2025!

Three Splits, Three Champions, Three International Events

In a departure from previous years, the LEC will no longer award Championship Points or hold Season Finals. Instead, each split will serve as a standalone competition, with the winner of each split securing a spot in an international tournament.

The Winter Split champion will qualify for a new international event taking place shortly after Winter concludes. Spring’s champions and runner-ups will qualify for the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), while Summer’s winner will earn a spot at Worlds, alongside two other teams from the LEC’s Summer playoffs.

Winter Split: Familiar Format with Exciting Tweaks

The LEC 2025 season will kick off with the Winter Split on January 18. This split will largely resemble the format used throughout the 2024 season, but with a few new twists.

Teams will compete in a single round robin for the Winter Season, with all matches being best-of-ones (Bo1). The top eight teams from the regular season will compete in a double elimination bracket in the Winter playoffs. All games will be Bo3 format save for Lower Semifinal, Upper and Lower Final, and Grand Finals, which will be Bo5 format instead.

One of the most exciting features of the LEC in 2025 will be the introduction of “Fearless Draft” mode for the Winter playoffs, where champions picked in previous games of a series will be banned from future games for the remainder of the series. This new addition will push teams to innovate and adapt under new draft constraints.

Lastly, the Winter Split champion will represent the LEC in the new international event. More details about this tournament are expected in later this year.

Spring Split: BO3s and a Roadshow Experience

From Spring onward, the LEC will transition to best-of-three (BO3) matches in the regular season, replacing the traditional best-of-one (BO1) structure. Each team will face every other team in nine BO3s over the course of seven weeks, offering fans a more in-depth look at team dynamics and adaptability.

The top six teams from the Spring Split regular season will advance to the playoffs, where they’ll compete in a double-elimination bracket with BO5 matches. The two finalists will qualify for MSI 2025, while the champion will take home the Spring trophy.

Additionally, to bring the league closer to its fans, certain Spring Split matches will be part of a “Roadshow” event, hosted in various European countries. Riot Games has hinted at potential events in regions with passionate fanbases, such as France and Spain, but details are yet to be finalized.

Summer Split: A Unique Group Stage Format

The Summer Split will introduce another format twist, dividing the ten LEC teams into two groups. Each team will play four BO3 matches within their group.

Once the group stage has drawn to a close, the top two teams from each group will automatically advance to playoffs. The bottom teams from each group, in turn, will be immediately eliminated. The remaining four teams will compete in cross-group matchups to determine the final two playoff spots.

Playoffs for the Summer Split will follow the same double-elimination BO5 format, culminating in the awarding of the final trophy for 2025. The Summer Split playoffs will also determine the LEC’s three representatives at the World Championship. Riot Games plans to host these final clashes in front of a live audience as part of a summer roadshow event, with details on the venue to be announced early next year.

Drawing Professional Play Closer to the Fans

In line with its goal to bring the competitive environment closer to the actual in-game experience, Riot Games plans to align LEC matches with the live patch as much as possible. This means fans can expect to see the latest champion updates, item changes, and meta shifts reflected in LEC play, adding another layer of excitement and unpredictability to each match.

The LEC’s new format also emphasizes accessibility and regional fan engagement, with the Spring and Summer Roadshows bringing the league closer to its community across Europe.

Key Takeaways for LEC 2025

  • Three Splits: Winter, Spring, and Summer, each crowning a champion and offering a direct route to international competition.
  • New International Event: The Winter Split champion will qualify for a new international tournament, details pending.
  • Best-of-Three Regular Season in Spring and Summer: BO3 matches will replace BO1s, allowing teams to showcase more depth and strategy.
  • Group Stage Format in Summer: A unique structure will see teams split into two groups, leading to intense cross-group elimination matches.
  • Fan-Focused Roadshows: Select Spring and Summer matches will be played in fan-favorite locations across Europe.
  • Fearless Draft in Winter Playoffs: Winter playoffs will feature a ban-on-repeat draft mode, forcing teams to innovate within each series.

With these changes, the LEC aims to deliver an unforgettable season for fans and players alike. The 2025 season promises more intense competition, strategic depth, and fan engagement, setting the stage for one of the most exciting years in European League of Legends.
