Overwatch Game Modes Explained

There are currently 5 different game modes for Standard Play: Escort, Hybrid, Control, Push, and Flashpoint. Each Game Mode offers different challenges and objectives for teams to conquer in order to score a round win.

Escort

The teams are assigned as Attackers or Defenders. Attackers must escort a payload across 3 checkpoints throughout the map while Defenders attempt to stop them.

Hybrid

Hybrid is the partial successor to the old Assault game mode. Blending objectives from Control and Escort, it consists of the Attackers having to seize control of a 'control' area before escorting a payload across 2 checkpoints.

Control

Consisting of 3 'control' areas, the Control game mode has both teams serve as attackers in a symmetrical map, fighting to seize and retain control of the active 'control' area. Only one 'control' area is active at a time and all 3 co-exist within a larger set location.

Push

Consisting of a symmetrical map and a robot in the centre. Each team has a block that the robot will automatically begin pushing along a track when under the team's control. Only one team can control the robot at a time and the winner is determined by the furthest travelling block or the first to reach the endpoint.

Flashpoint

Functioning similar to the Control game mode, Flashpoint maps consist of 5 control points with each team contesting. Seizing a control point unlocks the next one and so forth. The first team to claim 3 control points wins.

How Overwatch Picks Your Map

In Standard Play (Unranked and Competitive), players are given limited autonomy to select a map for play. This is called the Map Voting Phase.

During this phase, 3 maps are selected from the Standard Play pool and players can vote for 1 of the maps. The 3 maps are determined by the following factors:

  • 2 of the maps are chosen based on the aggregate least played maps of all the players in the match.
  • The third map is chosen completely at random.

Additionally, the option to vote for a 'Random Map' also exists, allowing players a chance to play a map outside of the offered 3.

Map Voting is determined as follows:

  • 6 or more votes for a single map with no other map receiving a vote triggers 'Landslide' where the voting phase ends instantly.
  • If the votes are distributed between at least 2 of the maps, the game will randomly select the map to be played with weightage given based on number of votes (3/6/1 votes will have 0.3, 0.6, and 0.1 accordingly).
  • If no votes are submitted, a map is selected at random.
