Gyrocopter is one of the most explosive agility heroes in Dota 2. He mixes strong early magical damage with late-game physical power, giving players a flexible way to pressure fights from the start. This guide breaks down his story, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and how to play him well.

Aurel was an engineer who spent his life in war and conflict. After retiring to the Ash Archipelago, he discovered an incomplete schematic for a flying machine. With time and resources on his side, he committed himself to building the world’s first non-magical aircraft.

Multiple prototypes failed. Scrap metal piled up. Ten years after beginning the project, Aurel sat in another attempt, expecting it to explode like all the others. Instead, the craft lifted. He soared with the gulls for the first time.

His joy did not last. A cannonball from a passing ship tore the machine apart. Aurel survived but returned home furious and determined. He built a new Gyrocopter—this time armed with cannons, missiles, and rockets. What began as a simple dream of flight became a weapon capable of clearing battlefields.

Gyrocopter: Abilities Breakdown and Playstyle

Gyrocopter is a ranged carry with strong area damage. He creates early pressure with Rocket Barrage and Call Down, then shifts into a physical threat through Flak Cannon. His main weakness is his short attack range and lack of mobility, which make positioning important.

He scales well when supported by items that boost survivability, movement speed, and late-game damage. While he is usually played as a carry, he can also work as a roaming support due to strong early spells.

Afterburner (Innate)

Gyrocopter gains movement speed temporarily after damaging an enemy with an attack or abilities.

Rocket Barrage

Rocket Barrage is Gyrocopter’s early power source. It fires a rapid salvo of rockets around him for three seconds. The rockets target a random enemy within 400 range, making it strongest when only one enemy is present. He also gains slow resistance during this time.

The damage comes in quick intervals and can reach very high totals if every rocket hits. Because it does not strike invisible units or targets hidden in fog, vision is important. Homing Missile and Call Down help supply that vision during fights.

Players often use Rocket Barrage to secure early kills or clear camps. Positioning is key. Standing near only one hero maximizes its impact. Gyrocopter can attack and move while using the ability, but his attack animation may slow down a chase unless he has a movement speed advantage.

Homing Missile

Homing Missile sends out a slow, accelerating projectile that stuns and damages its target. It begins stationary for 2.5 seconds, then gains speed over time. Enemy heroes can attack it and destroy it, so casting the ability before a fight begins is ideal.

The missile deals high damage on impact and applies a strong stun. When used early in a gank, it forces opponents to react, run, or spend time trying to destroy it. It can interrupt channeling spells and pressure heroes who rely on abilities to survive.

Because the missile takes time to reach its target, casting it from fog or behind trees gives the opponent less time to respond.

Flak Cannon

Flak Cannon gives Gyrocopter a way to hit every enemy near him whenever he attacks. The active version lasts for a set number of attacks or 12 seconds. Only his main target receives attack modifiers, but every other valid unit in range takes pure physical projectile hits.

This ability defines Gyrocopter’s late game. It allows him to damage multiple heroes, clear waves, and shred stacked neutral camps. The sound and overhead icon are visible, so enemies know when it is active.

While powerful, Flak Cannon does not hit units in fog or invisible targets. Choosing the right moment to activate it often decides the outcome of a fight.

Call Down (Ultimate)

Call Down fires three air-to-ground missiles in a chosen direction, each spaced 500 units apart. The ability slows enemies and deals high area damage. Because the indicator is only visible to allies, opponents must react to sound and positioning.

The delayed impact means timing matters. Casting the ability where the enemy is moving, or combining it with allied disables, makes it more reliable. It also adds vision to the targeted area, helping prevent jukes.

Call Down loses damage impact late in the match, but its slow still helps control enemy movement. It can also clear creep waves and assist in farming when needed.

Aghanim Upgrades

Homing Missile

Improved by purchasing Aghanim's Shard. The missile also now fires a Rocket Barrage around itself after one second. This barrage prioritizes the missile’s target. Existing missiles update immediately when the Shard is acquired.

Side Gunner

Unlocked by purchasing Aghanim's Scepter. Adds a Side Gunner that fires extra attacks at nearby enemies, even when Gyrocopter is disabled. When Flak Cannon is active, the Side Gunner shoots two targets.

Gyrocopter needs movement speed, survivability, and damage. His farming relies on both his spells and his ability to attack safely. Item choices depend on his role, lane, and enemy lineup.

Early items such as Boots of Speed, Magic Wand, and Phase Boots help Gyrocopter pressure lanes. Drum of Endurance or Boots of Bearing improve mobility and attack speed, and Mask of Madness lets him sustain in the jungle.

Mid-game items like Dragon Lance, Sange and Yasha, and Black King Bar help him fight safely. Later, Butterfly and Satanic give him the durability to survive long engagements. Damage items like Daedalus, Monkey King Bar, and Divine Rapier amplify his Flak Cannon output.

Hurricane Pike can push Homing Missile forward and extend Gyrocopter’s range. Aghanim’s Scepter adds reliable damage through the Side Gunner. Boots of Travel help him join fights across the map.

Ability Builds and Roles

Most players max Rocket Barrage first for early damage. Homing Missile is added depending on the situation; some players delay leveling it until level 11, while others max it early for ganking.

As a carry, Gyrocopter focuses on farming with Flak Cannon and fighting with Call Down. As a support, he builds cheap items such as Veil of Discord and uses his high early damage to secure kills and create space.

Tips and Strategy

Gyrocopter’s early presence shapes how teams fight. His spells let him pressure lanes and punish overextended heroes. Because his damage falls off when enemies buy spell immunity, he must farm consistently and transition into physical items.

Rocket Barrage works best when he isolates a target, so staying away from creeps while diving on a hero increases its impact. Homing Missile should be cast before a fight starts, giving time for the missile to accelerate. Flak Cannon should be saved for key moments, since it has a long cooldown. Call Down helps zone enemies and secure kills when used with disables.

Positioning is vital. Gyrocopter lacks escape tools and loses fights easily when caught. Good vision and movement items help reduce this risk. When given space to farm and fight at the right times, he becomes a strong threat across the map.

Final Thoughts

Gyrocopter rewards Dota 2 players who manage spacing, timing, and item progression. His abilities offer strong control of early skirmishes, while his late-game damage can overwhelm entire teams. With smart movement and well-timed spells, he can dominate the battlefield from start to finish.
