After nearly six years away from Counter-Strike, Ukrainian tournament organizer StarLadder is making a major comeback. They’ve announced the return of their StarSeries event, with Season 20 taking place in Budapest, Hungary, from September 13-21, 2025.

This marks their first Counter-Strike tournament since the launch of CS2. Thus making it a highly anticipated event in the esports calendar.

A New Era of Competitive Counter-Strike

StarLadder's StarSeries Season 20 will see 20 of the world’s best teams competing for a share of the $500,000 prize pool.

The tournament will feature two key stages: a 16-team group stage followed by an 8-team main event.

Format Breakdown: From Qualifiers to the Main Event

The journey to Budapest will kick off with online qualifiers for teams from the Americas and Europe. With the final four spots in the group stage going to those who succeed in these regional competitions.

The remaining 16 teams will receive invitations based on their Valve Regional Standings (VRS). The top four invited teams will bypass the group stage and head straight into the main event. This invitation system ensures that the highest-ranked teams in the world are rewarded with direct access to the final phase of the tournament.

Group Stage (September 13-17, 2025):

  • The Group Stage will follow a GSL (double-elimination) format.
  • Sixteen teams will compete in the group stage. This includes the top 12 teams invited from the VRS rankings and the 4 teams that qualify through the online qualifiers.
  • These teams will be divided into 4 groups, with 4 teams in each group.
  • The top two teams from each group will then advance to face off in play-in matches for the four remaining main event slots.

Playoffs (September 18-21, 2025):

  • The Playoffs will feature a Bo3 double-elimination bracket.
  • The four top-ranked VRS teams will skip the group stage and play-in stage, and head directly into the bracket.
  • The four teams from the play-in stage will join them, setting the stage for a fierce battle for the championship title.

In addition to this, StarLadder has laid out strict conditions for the invite system. Teams must ensure that at least three of the players on the roster at the time of the invitation remain on the team.

Moreover, any team found guilty of match-fixing or unfair play will face disqualification, ensuring the highest level of competitive integrity.

Prize Pool and Tournament Stakes

While the current prize pool sits at $500,000, StarLadder has hinted that this amount could increase depending on sponsorships and additional support before the event. The final prize pool distribution and further details will be announced closer to the tournament’s start date.

StarSeries Beyond 2025

This tournament is just one of at least four events StarLadder has in store for the CS2 scene. StarSeries Season 19, which is set to run from May 26 to June 1, 2025, remains largely shrouded in mystery as the organizers have yet to reveal details regarding its location and format.

The Ukrainian tournament organizer has also teased two events for 2026, promising more exciting competition on the horizon.

StarLadder's return to Counter-Strike marks a significant moment for the esports community, promising a series of thrilling events for players and fans alike. With Budapest set as the stage for their first major CS2 tournament, expectations are high. And the excitement is already building.

Another Early Exit, Same Old Story: Team Falcons Are Running Out Of Excuses

There is a cruel irony at the heart of Team Falcons' CS2 project. Hand someone from 2022 their current roster sheet — NiKo, m0NESY, TeSeS, Kyxsan, kyosuke, all under the tutelage of five-time Major-winning coach Zonic — and they would confidently declare this team the undisputed best in the world. And yet, here we are in March 2026, watching Falcons get knocked out of BLAST Open Spring in the quarterfinals by PARIVISION.
