Riot Games to Stop 2XKO Development in December 2026

Riot Games has officially announced that active development for 2XKO, its free-to-play 2v2 tag fighting game set in the League of Legends universe, will conclude in December 2026. The decision was shared on August 20, 2026, and comes just months after Riot significantly downsized the 2XKO team back in February.

While the servers will remain online for the foreseeable future, the title’s ambitious live-service roadmap is being cut short.

The Path to the Sunset

According to Riot Games, the decision was driven by flat player retention. Despite successful early playtests and stable initial engagement, 2XKO failed to capture a wide enough audience to ensure its long-term financial sustainability.

"2XKO costs us substantially more to operate than it brings in," the development team admitted, noting that player engagement remained relatively flat despite major updates like the PVE mode "The Climb" and the additions of Akali, Senna, and Thresh.

While diehard tag-team fighting game players embraced 2XKO, other fighting game fans struggled to find compelling reasons to stick around.

A Generous Wind-Down Roadmap

To do right by its dedicated community, Riot is rolling out a transition plan that includes full refunds. All in-game purchases made on or before August 20, 2026, will be refunded directly to players.

The game’s final months will feature two more champion releases:

  • Patch 1.3.1 (September 8, 2026): Introduces new character Lux to the line-up, unlocks all existing champions for all players, and disables Ranked play to streamline matchmaking into Casual lobbies. A massive "Ultimate Bundle" featuring nearly all cosmetics will be sold for $39.99.

  • Patch 1.3.3 (October 2026): Launches Samira, the Desert Rose, as the final playable character.

  • Patch 1.3.5 (December 2026): A final bug-fix pass will mark the official end of active development.

Following December, 2XKO will remain free-to-download and playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S with persistent online servers.

Competitive Ecosystem To Remain Intact Through 2026

For players and tournament organizers, the official competitive framework will remain steady in the near term.

Riot confirmed that the official 2XKO Competitive Series will continue unchanged through 2026, with full support and prize pools maintained for all remaining Major and Challenger events. The circuit's grand finale is scheduled to take place in November 2026.

Beyond this year, the future of the game's competitive scene will transition entirely to the community, with organizers free to run their own online or offline events using Riot's standard Community Competition Guidelines.

Looking Ahead

Ultimately, 2XKO will stand as a fascinating "what-if" in fighting game history. By combining Riot's massive IP with high-level tag-team mechanics, it aimed to revolutionize the genre but instead serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of modern live-service game development.

While its active evolution is ending far sooner than anyone expected, the decision to keep the servers running and provide full refunds ensures that the game’s brief, intense competitive spirit will linger in the lobbies for those who still wish to battle.
