Earlier this year, Valve announced there wouldn’t be the annual Battle Pass for this year’s iteration of The International. Instead, they plan to bring back the International Compendium.

The community rejoiced over the initial announcement. However, the International compendium did not stand up to the community’s expectations.

Unlike the former glory days, The International 2023 Compendium lacks content. Moreover, the community questioned the worth of purchasing the Compendium, as there were no immortal treasures or exclusive skins.

The BackLash

The lack of content caused a huge backlash within the community. One fan expressed his discontent with the compendium.

“7.49$ for a HUD, some voice lines and a bunch of stickers.”

Other fans also express their disappointment. One fan wrote.

“Upside: You really don’t have to buy it.”

Players anticipated the shortage of new skins as per Valve’s announcement earlier this year about trying a new approach.

Unfortunately, they were disappointed by the lack of content, such as Cavern’s Crawl or exciting new mini-games for players to enjoy with their friends during The International season.

Robson "TeaGuvnor" Merritt, a public figure within the community, eagerly waited for more than 32 hours. He streamed his entire process on Twitch whilst solving puzzles.

As soon as the update dropped, he rushed to Valve's blog post. However, his excitement immediately changed to disappointment as he could no longer hide it.

Do I feel like something is missing? Yes”, he admitted.

Same Mistake; Hopefully, Different Outcome?

Valve suffered tremendously last year due to its mistake. The International prize pool decreased for the first time since its debut. In a desperate effort to mitigate the damage, Valve gave every player a free BattlePass and an Arcana.

Valve released this year’s compendium at two different prices. The standard compendium price is $ 7.49, and the upgraded variant costs $29.99.

If the player chooses to purchase the Compendium, 25% of their payment will go towards The International 2023 prize pool. At this time, Valve has not revealed when The International Compendium will conclude.

Valve has assured that the next update will arrive after The Internationals 2023 Champion has been crowned. The update will include several exciting additions.

However, with lacklustre content and a limited time, The International 2023 Compendium is expected to fail bigger than The International 2022 Battlepass.

Nevertheless, players are content with the new optimisable player profiles. It enables them to showcase their in-game creativity.

Recently, Valve also announced the 2023 DPC season will be the final year for The Dota Pro Circuit. With the International on the horizon and the Compendium now available, the community is keen to know Valve's next move, as it features a lot of expected promises.
