Valve dropped a significant update for Counter-Strike 2 on May 7, 2025, titled Mission Possible. The update brings a host of new community maps, introduces a weekly mission system, and makes several quality-of-life improvements to the game.

Players can now look forward to exploring five new community-designed maps, including the long-awaited return of fan-favorite Agency, which has received a visual overhaul for CS2.

The update also introduces a meaningful progression system through Weekly Missions that reward players with XP for completing specific challenges. This XP contributes toward account leveling, weekly drops, and can help with unlocking content in Armory Passes.

Map Pool Overhaul

The update features a substantial refresh of the CS2 map pool, with several community-made maps joining the rotation while others are removed:

New Maps Added:

  • Jura - Added to Competitive, Casual, and Deathmatch modes
  • Grail - A classic defusal map that joins Competitive, Casual, and Deathmatch
  • Agency - The popular hostage map returns to Competitive, Casual, and Deathmatch
  • Dogtown - New addition to the Wingman mode
  • Brewery - Also added to Wingman gameplay.

Maps Removed:

  • Basalt
  • Edin
  • Palais
  • Whistle

These changes represent a significant shift in the available maps, with Valve reorganizing the Casual and Deathmatch map groups into more defined categories:

  • Defusal Group Alpha: Dust 2, Mirage, Inferno, Vertigo.
  • Defusal Group Delta: Train, Anubis, Ancient, Overpass, Nuke.
  • Community Map Group: Jura, Grail, Agency.
  • Hostage Group: Office, Italy.

The Cache Disappointment

Despite community excitement and speculation, the highly anticipated return of Cache was not included in this update. The map, created by FMPONE and Volcano, has been a community favorite and was even spotted in workshop form for Counter-Strike 2.

Data miner Gabe Follower had previously hinted at its potential inclusion alongside Agency in a cryptic tweet that featured six emojis, which many interpreted as a tease for six new maps.

Cache holds the unique distinction of being the only community-created map to have been featured in the Active Duty Map Pool in CS:GO, making its absence in this update particularly disappointing for competitive players.

Despite FMPONE's initial reluctance to sell the map to Valve, the community's love for it might have changed his stance. If the map has becomes available to Valve, they’ll still have to rework it before adding it to the game, keeping hopes of Cache's return alive.

Weekly Missions System

Perhaps the most significant gameplay addition is the introduction of Weekly Missions, accessible via the main or play menu. The new system gives players:

  • One mission each week
  • Seven days to complete before expiration
  • Experience points rewards upon completion

What's Next?

With the BLAST.tv Austin Major approaching (starting June 2nd), this update marks an important refresh to keep the game feeling fresh.

While some players may be disappointed by Cache's absence, the influx of five new community maps and the weekly mission system provides substantial new content for the Counter-Strike community. The update, weighing in at approximately 5 GB, is now available for all players.
