Meta Takeaways from First Stand 2026: Yunara Dominates as Azir Falls Off

Meta Takeaways from First Stand 2026: Yunara Dominates as Azir Falls Off

And just like that, First Stand 2026 has come and gone. With the first international tournament of the season now done, it's time to take a look back at the meta that defined the event, and the champions that teams consistently relied on as they chased glory.

First Stand 2026 stage

First Stand 2026: Most Picked Champions

To kick things off, here's a look at the top 5 most picked champions of First Stand:

Yunara13 picks5 bans69% win rate
Vi12 picks9 bans50% win rate
Ahri12 picks5 bans42% win rate
Aurora12 picks3 bans33% win rate
Xin Zhao11 picks10 bans73% win rate

Right off the bat, the most important stat that sticks out is the fact that Yunara was the only champion to be picked in every single series of First Stand 2026. Perhaps more surprising, though, is the fact that, despite being the most picked champion at the event, the game's newest AD carry manintained an incredible 69% win rate at the tournament.

This represents a stark contrast to Yunara's poor 48% win rate across all ranks in Solo Queue in the current live patch (Patch 26.06). While pro players are able to tear through the Rift on the pick at the highest level of play, the average player is not able to find near-similar levels of success with Yunara.

Top Lane Variety Reigns Supreme

No Top Lane champion shows up in the top 5 most picked champs at First Stand, and there's a good reason for that. At the first international stop of the year, Top Lane players were by far the most diverse with their picks.

The Top Lane was the role with the most unique champions picked at First Stand, with a total of 25 champs seeing play time. For reference, ADCs saw the least number of unique picks instead, with just 18.

Still, the Top Lane Staple himself, Renekton, was the most picked champion in the role with a total of 10 picks and a 60% win rate. More than 15 years after his release, it really seems that, no matter how much time goes by, Renekton will always remain the Top Lane champion.

On his way to the trophy, BLG's Chen "Bin" Zebin played the most unique champions in the Top Lane with 10 picks at First Stand.

Azir, Orianna, Ryze, and Taliyah Disappear

Another interesting stat from First Stand is the fact that Azir, Orianna, Ryze, and Taliyah hardly received any stage time in Brazil. It's worth remembering that, during the first split of the year just a month ago, these four champions dominated pick rates in the LEC, LCS, and LCK, where they became the top 4 most picked Mid Laners at every one of those regions.

Their disappearance from First Stand, however, is not without reason.

Azir and Taliyah's Nerfs Take Effect

For First Stand's patch (Patch 26.05), Riot decided to nerf Azir and Taliyah (and Orianna) after these champions continued tearing through pro play. And, by the looks of it, the nerfs worked as intended.

Compared to their pick rates at the LEC Versus, LCS Lock-In, and LCK Cup, Azir and Taliyah's number of picks at First Stand completely fell off a cliff.

Taliyah, on the one hand, simply didn't seem worth the pick at all anymore, being picked just once throughout the tournament (and receiving only 1 ban as well). As for Azir, the Emperor of the Sands was picked 4 times at First Stand. At the event, G2 Esports' Rasmus "Caps" Winther was the only player to pick up a win on Azir (perfect 2-0 record on the champion, in fact), elevating the champ's tournament win rate to a respectable 50%.

Bans Eat Ryze and Orianna Alive

As for the other two Horsemen of the Mid Lane, their MIA status at First Stand came for a different reason. Ryze and Orianna were the two most banned champions of the tournament with a whopping 34 and 33 bans, respectively (Karma was the third-highest at a distant 25 bans).

Simply put, no one wanted to have to have to deal with these two picks in their games; and with good reason. Suffice it to say that, in the 7 times that Ryze and Orianna did get through the bans and were picked at First Stand, they put up a combined record of 6-1 (86% win rate).

An Exciting First Stop

First Stand 2026 truly had a little bit of everything. From G2 showing the world that Gen.G can, in fact, bleed, to BLG's long-time-coming first-ever international trophy, this was an exciting tournament from start to finish.

As it pertains to the meta, FST served to deliver some more variety to the Mid Lane while Fearless Draft continues to prove its worth as one of the best additions to the League of Legends pro scene in a long time. Now, it's time for teams to head back home and prepare for the start of the respective regional splits, where no doubt a few meta surprises await.
