ESL, one of the leading esports tournament organizers, has recently made a significant announcement regarding the discontinuation of its National Championships in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). This decision comes in anticipation of the release of Counter-Strike 2 (CS2). And brings an end to a two-decade-long tradition of national CS:GO tournaments. This article explores the key details and implications of ESL's decision.

A Shift in Focus: Transition to Pan-Regional Tournaments

ESL's decision to terminate the CS:GO National Championships is primarily driven by a shift in focus towards both nation-based CS ecosystems and a "borderless system based on pan-regional online tournaments." The company cited compatibility issues across various ESL Pro Tour properties as a key factor behind this change. As a result, the CS:GO National Championships will be discontinued either immediately or after the upcoming season, depending on the respective countries.

The discontinuation of the ESL National Championships in CS:GO is a significant blow to local esports scenes around the world. These national tournaments have played a vital role in nurturing local talent and fostering competitive environments. These events helped develop grassroot level counter-strike in multiple regions including Oceania, UK, Poland, Spain, Benelux, France, Turkey etc. While also providing opportunities for tier two and tier three esports teams. Many fans, players, and esports personalities are saddened by this decision, particularly with the anticipation of CS2's release.

Timelines for Closure and The Future

The timing of the closure varies by country. Benelux, France, Spain, and Turkey will not have the opportunity to hold their final season this year. On the other hand, Australia & New Zealand, Brazil, Germany, Poland, and the U.K. will have their last season in 2023 before ceasing operations in 2024. Notably, Polish and German teams will still have distinct chances to qualify for IEM Katowice and Cologne, respectively, events taking place in their home countries.

While ESL is discontinuing the CS:GO National Championships, the company emphasizes that there is still room for regional and national competitions in its ecosystem. But they will no longer be an active focus. This shift raises questions about the future of grassroots esports development and the role of national tournaments in the evolving landscape.

Challenges Ahead for ESL

These changes in ESL's approach to CS:GO tournaments are not the only ones on the horizon. Valve has previously announced that CS2 will feature an open circuit in 2025. Thus eliminating "unique business relationships" between tournament organizers like ESL and attending teams. This means ESL will lose the opportunity to partner with certain organizations in exchange for direct invites to their events. Potentially requiring the company to reevaluate its business model and strategies in response to these developments.
