Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) has introduced a new update that could enhance performance for players using Intel's hybrid processors. This update brings a game-changing feature that allows users to control how CS2 utilizes the Performance (P) and Efficiency (E) cores in modern CPUs. But does this really give Intel users a boost?

This article is based on information and insights from the 3kliksphilip's YouTube video, published on December 20, 2024. We recommend viewers check out the original video for a detailed visual demonstration of the benchmarks and real-world gameplay tests mentioned in this article.

The new core utilization setting

The latest patch adds an option in CS2's settings menu, enabling players to optimize core usage for their processors. This feature is especially relevant for Intel CPUs with hybrid architectures, such as the 12th, 13th, and 14th-generation processors, which combine high-performance P-cores with energy-efficient E-cores.

To check if this applies to your system:

  1. Open CS2 and navigate to the settings menu.
  2. Look for the new core utilization option.
  3. If visible, your processor supports this feature.

This setting allows players to prioritize P-cores or restrict the game to use only these faster cores, potentially unlocking better frame rates and smoother gameplay.

Performance gains tested on Intel CPUs

3kliksphilip conducted extensive testing using an Intel Core i9-3900K processor, equipped with 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores. The results were promising:

  • Up to 15% improvement in average and minimum frame rates
  • Lower CPU utilization, as only P-cores were utilized
  • Better power efficiency, despite not using E-cores

These gains were particularly noticeable in controlled benchmark scenarios. When set to use only P-cores, CS2 delivered consistently higher frame rates compared to the default settings.

Real-world gaming performance

While benchmarks showed clear improvements, real-world gameplay scenarios introduced more variables. Testing in deathmatch matches on Dust2 revealed that prioritizing or restricting to P-cores continued to deliver better performance compared to default settings. However, the impact varied depending on map activity and CPU load during intense firefights.

Why does this work?

Intel's hybrid architecture is designed to balance performance and efficiency by assigning heavy workloads to P-cores and lighter tasks to E-cores. However, E-cores are not always ideal for gaming workloads due to their lower performance capabilities. By allowing CS2 to focus solely on P-cores, the game can maximize its performance potential while reducing unnecessary CPU overhead.

Interestingly, this also results in improved power efficiency. While E-cores are often labeled as "power-efficient", they are actually designed for space efficiency rather than outright energy savings during high-performance tasks like gaming.

How to check if you're CPU-Limited

To determine whether your system is CPU-limited: Monitor GPU utilization during gameplay. If GPU usage is below 100%, your CPU may be the bottleneck - especially in CPU-intensive games like CS2.

The future of hybrid processors

Intel continues refining its hybrid architecture with features like its Application Optimization (APO) program for the 14th-generation processors, which optimizes core usage for specific games. As hybrid designs become more common, developers like Valve are adapting their software to take full advantage of these architectures.

Afterall, does intel give you a boost?

For CS2 players with Intel's hybrid processors, the answer is a resounding yes—provided you enable the new core utilization setting. Restricting CS2 to use only P-cores can deliver significant performance improvements in both average and minimum frame rates while reducing CPU utilization and improving power efficiency.

If you own an Intel processor with P and E cores, this update is a must-explore feature. Simply adjust the setting in-game and enjoy smoother gameplay without needing complex manual configurations or BIOS tweaks. For players looking for every competitive edge, Intel's hybrid architecture paired with CS2's latest update offers a clear advantage.
