Alistar is one of the oldest champions in League of Legends, known for his role as a frontline tank and crowd control specialist. His lore paints him as a once-enslaved gladiator seeking justice for his fallen clan. In the game, he uses his strength, horns, and resilience to protect allies and disrupt enemies. This article explains each of Alistar’s abilities and how they shape his role on the Rift.

Alistar’s Lore and Identity

Alistar comes from a proud clan destroyed by the Noxian empire. Captured and forced into gladiatorial combat, he resisted becoming a beast through sheer willpower. After regaining his freedom, he chose to fight for the oppressed. This background connects directly to his in-game design: a champion who endures punishment while shielding others.

Passive: Triumphant Roar

Alistar’s passive ability, Triumphant Roar, provides him with reliable sustain during fights.

He gains stacks whenever he stuns or displaces enemy champions, and when minions or neutral monsters die near him. A larger number of stacks is earned if an enemy champion or epic monster dies close by.

At seven stacks, Alistar heals himself for 5% of his maximum health and nearby allies for 7%. This effect has an internal cooldown, but he can still collect stacks while waiting for it to trigger. The healing applies at the same time for him and his teammates, making it effective during extended fights.

This passive highlights his identity as both protector and survivor, giving him presence even without direct ability use.

Q Ability: Pulverize

Pulverize is Alistar’s most recognizable move. He slams the ground, damaging enemies in an area while knocking them up and stunning them for one second.

  • Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10 seconds

  • Magic damage: 60/100/140/180/220 (+80% AP)

This ability is a core initiation tool. It can be combined with Headbutt to deliver quick knockups, often referred to as the “Headbutt–Pulverize combo.” Because the knockup effect is airborne, it cannot be reduced by Tenacity, ensuring reliable control.

W Ability: Headbutt

Headbutt makes Alistar dash to an enemy and knock them back while briefly stunning them. The knockback distance is 700 units, though this can be reduced if buffered into Pulverize.

  • Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10 seconds

  • Magic damage: 55/110/165/220/275 (+100% AP)

The ability allows both aggressive and defensive plays. Alistar can knock a carry into his team or peel for his allies by sending away an enemy diver. Because it can push targets through terrain, skilled use often changes the outcome of team fights.

E Ability: Trample

Trample empowers Alistar with area damage and crowd control potential. For five seconds, he becomes ghosted and damages nearby enemies every half second. Each tick that hits a champion gives him a Trample stack, up to five.

At maximum stacks, his next basic attack against a champion stuns them for one second and deals bonus magic damage. This ends the effect early.

  • Cooldown: 12/11.5/11/10.5/10 seconds

  • Damage per tick: 8/11/14/17/20 (+7% AP)

This ability adds consistent pressure in skirmishes. It forces enemies to respect Alistar’s zone of control, especially when combined with his other forms of crowd control.

R Ability: Unbreakable Will

Unbreakable Will is Alistar’s ultimate, and it cements his identity as a tank. On activation, he cleanses himself of all crowd control effects and takes reduced incoming damage for seven seconds.

  • Cooldown: 120/100/80 seconds

  • Damage reduction: 55/65/75%

This ultimate lets Alistar soak huge amounts of damage during team fights. While true damage bypasses the reduction, most incoming threats become manageable. Used at the right moment, it allows him to stay in the middle of a fight while allies deal damage safely.

Ability Combos

Alistar’s power comes from chaining abilities together. The most common combo is Headbutt into Pulverize, which lets him dash at an enemy and immediately knock up surrounding targets. Trample often follows, providing more damage and another potential stun.

Another frequent use is Pulverize into Headbutt, where Alistar first knocks enemies into the air, then isolates a priority target by pushing them away. This is effective against fragile backline champions.

Playstyle and Role

Alistar is most often played as a support. His kit thrives in close-range fights, and his healing passive benefits both him and his lane partner. In the early game, he can create kill pressure with his combos, while later he becomes a primary initiator and tank.

He excels at engaging fights, protecting carries, and disrupting enemy formations. His reliance on cooldowns means timing is critical—misusing Headbutt, for example, can push an enemy to safety instead of into danger.

Trivia and Interesting Facts

  • Alistar’s name comes from the Gaelic form of Alexander, meaning “Defender of Man.”

  • During early testing, he was simply called “Minotaur.”

  • In the Ultra Rapid Fire game mode in 2014, he was considered too strong and was disabled outside of custom games.

  • His Series 1 Eternals include playful references like By the Horns and Indomita-Bull.

Conclusion

Alistar stands as a symbol of resilience and power in League of Legends. His abilities combine disruption, durability, and team support, making him valuable in every stage of the game. For players seeking a champion who can control fights and protect teammates, Alistar remains a consistent and dependable choice.
