The C4 explosive is exclusive to Terrorists in Counter-Strike. It is a plastic explosive made mostly of RDX (Research Development Explosive) with a detonation velocity of 8,092 m/s. The main goal in bomb defusal maps is either planting or defusing the C4.

Mechanics of the Counter-Strike C4

Receiving and Dropping the C4

At round start, a random Terrorist receives the bomb. The bomb can be dropped and picked up by teammates. It shows as a red dot or C4 icon on the radar, and teammates are alerted when it is dropped or picked up. Counter-Terrorists cannot pick up the bomb, and it cannot be moved by shooting or explosions. Running speed with C4 is identical to running with a knife.

Planting the C4

To plant the C4, players must go to a designated bombsite marked A or B, equip the C4 by pressing [5], and hold the primary fire button ([Mouse 1]) or the USE key ([E] by default in Global Offensive and CS2). Planting takes 3.2 seconds. During this, players are forced into crouching in Global Offensive, while in older games players can crouch or stand but cannot move or jump.

C4 Detonation

Once planted, the bomb timer starts at 45 seconds for competitive matches in CS2. The bomb beeps and flashes red faster as detonation nears. If not defused, it explodes, and Terrorists win the round.

Explosion damage is typically 500 at close range with a radius of 1750 hammer units in CS2. Damage varies slightly depending on the map (e.g., Inferno has higher damage). Armor reduces explosion damage by half, and walls do not shield players from explosion damage within the radius.

Defusing the C4

Only Counter-Terrorists can defuse the bomb. Defusal takes 10 seconds normally, or 5 seconds with a defuse kit. Players must hold the USE key while looking directly at the bomb. Players defusing cannot shoot or reload, and if interrupted, defusal progress is lost.

Reward System for C4 Actions

  • $300 for planting the bomb (only in Global Offensive and CS2).
  • Terrorists earn an additional $800 if the bomb is planted but defused.
  • 2 score points awarded to players for successful planting or defusing.

Planting Strategies

Players should plant the C4 in open, easily defendable spots. Communicating with teammates for cover while planting is essential. Fake planting can also bait Counter-Terrorists into pushing prematurely.

Defending a Planted C4

Positioning at strategic angles to monitor defusal attempts is crucial. Players should use sound cues from beeping and defusal noises to track enemy positions. Distracting defusers with gunfire or grenades can delay or prevent defusal.

Defusal Tips for Counter-Terrorists

Counter-Terrorists should always buy a defuse kit for quicker defusal. Smoke grenades can provide visual cover while defusing. Clear communication with teammates ensures better protection during defusal attempts.

Notable Updates to the Counter-Strike C4

Recent updates include different beep sounds for bombsites A and B in CS:GO, and a defusal progress reset if players turn away too rapidly, introduced on June 22, 2020. In CS2, the pitch was further lowered for bomb plants on the B-site as well as an update that changes the sound of the C4's beeping during the last 10 seconds.

Common Bugs with the C4

V_c4_cz

  • Bots sometimes jump off edges attempting to retrieve dropped bombs.
  • Dropping bombs into unreachable areas can cause AI issues, though recent updates have reduced these occurrences.
  • Bots may drown or get stuck attempting to retrieve bombs dropped in water.
  • Bombs planted on movable props in older games might levitate or clip incorrectly.
  • Previously, planting could happen anywhere outside the bombsite causing gameplay disruptions, fixed early in the series.

Interesting Trivia About the Counter-Strike C4

P_c4_csx

  • The bomb code shown when arming the C4 is "7355608."
  • Originally, the C4 could be planted anywhere, even outside bombsites, but this was fixed early in the game's history.
  • The bomb's beeping sound changes pitch depending on the bombsite in CS:GO.
  • During festive events, the C4 is sometimes decorated with candy canes or gift wrap.
  • The explosion cannot harm players submerged in water in custom maps.
  • Bots automatically switch to knives and try escaping shortly before bomb detonation.
  • Early development allowed terrorists to plant bombs anywhere, causing gameplay issues and exploits.
  • C4 explosions previously destroyed nearby objects and props, though now mostly leave them intact.

How the C4 Has Evolved in Counter-Strike

Over the years, the Counter-Strike C4 has seen visual and functional updates, including visual enhancements in Source and Global Offensive, improved animations for planting and defusing, and seasonal changes such as festive decorations during special events.

Conclusion: Mastering the C4 in Counter-Strike

Effectively using the Counter-Strike C4 involves understanding planting, defending, and defusing tactics. Players who master these mechanics significantly improve their team's chances of winning. Continuous practice and clear team communication are critical for consistent success.
