The 2024 competitive season for League of Legends has been nothing short of a smashing success. As an esport, the game saw devotion to the scene take the shape of filled-out stadiums, riveting tournaments, edge-of-your-seat plays, and even a brand new Linkin Park song.

As players and viewers prepare for the start of the new season, join us as we revisit the highlights, triumphs, and turning points that shaped this unforgettable chapter in gaming history, the League of Legends 2024 season.

Chovy lifts his first international trophy

When Gen.G defeated Bilibili Gaming (BLG) to win the 2024 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) the storylines wrote themselves. Not only did Gen.G's victory mark the end of a 7-year-long LCK drought at MSI, it also meant mid laner Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon had finally earned his long-sought international trophy.

That's right, despite dominating mid laners on the competitive stage for 7 years and counting, Chovy and his lane kingdom had never quite managed to amount to international glory at Worlds or MSI. After MSI 2024, the only gap left in Chovy's resumé carries the shape of a Worlds trophy.

Having now surpassed the international hurdle once, however, the sky's the limit for a player that will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the best to ever do it.

G2 complete the LEC Grand Slam

G2's European domination is nothing new, that much is true. And yet, during the League of Legends 2024 season the team took their supremacy to a whole new level by completing the very first LEC Grand Slam, winning all four LEC titles throughout the year.

It seemed only right, of course, that G2 accomplished the feat by defeating none other than their historic rivals of Fnatic in the finals.

Fnatic, who once ruled over the European League of Legends scene, hasn't won a single trophy since the league went from EU LCS to LEC back in 2019. Instead, Fnatic have lost a total of 8 LEC Grand Finals to G2 now.

By securing the LEC Grand Slam in 2024, G2 have taken hegemony to a whole new level. With teams bolstering their ranks across the board for the start of the new LEC season, however, G2 will need to bring their A-game if they want to repeat the feat in 2025.

LCS says goodbye in the most LCS way

Team Liquid showed up to the Grand Finals of the 2024 LCS Championship high on confidence after completing the first undefeated season in LCS history. The scriptwriters, however, had other plans.

What was set to be the final LCS spectacle before the league's shift into the LTA for the coming season came to a thrilling conclusion that would not disappoint. With FlyQuest up 2-1 on Team Liquid in the Grand Finals of the LCS Championship, TL took a decisive teamfight victory and looked poised to take the series to a final fifth game.

As the team marched down the FlyQuest base in order to claim the nexus, however, the camera suddenly started panning away. Before the crowd, or even the players themselves, had a chance to realize what was going on, the FlyQuest minions had already ended the game all the way across Summoner's Rift.

And it was just like that, in true astounding fashion, that FlyQuest would go down in history as the last LCS Champions. Thank you, minions.

Hanwha Life put an end to Gen.G's reign of terror

During the LCK 2024 Summer Season, Gen.G dominated the competition to the point of setting not one, but several new league records. Despite their historic run, however, one final team stood in the way of Gen.G capping their season with a trophy.

Against all odds, Hanwha Life Esports elevated their level of play in the Grand Finals of the LCK 2024 Summer Playoffs. With Gen.G leading 2-1 and standing only a single win away from victory, HLE locked in to claim the final two games of the series, stunning Gen.G fans in the process.

The series, which featured some incredibly high League of Legends gameplay, will end up going down in time as one of the best finals in LCK history. For HLE, the series marked the team's very first LCK trophy, and the day they stood up to titans.

BLG come ever-so-close. Twice.

Our 2024 recap could not have come to an end without first handing a shoutout to Bilibili Gaming (BLG) for all their efforts throughout the year.

BLG utterly dominated the LPL in 2024, not only winning both the Spring and Summer trophies, but also looking relatively unfazed doing so. When it came to the international stage, however, the LCK had other plans.

Though the team made it to the finals of both MSI and Worlds in 2024, the Chinese powerhouse ultimately succumbed; first to Chovy and his thirst for international recognition, then to Faker and T1's uncanny Worlds aura.

Champions, however, are forged in fire. If the team continues to dazzle the world with some of the highest level League of Legends we have seen to date, then surely BLG will inevitably bathe in gold sooner rather than later.

Faker and Zeus vs the world

The 2024 League of Legends World Championship featured so many incredible storylines, yet for the purpose of this recap we would like to focus on one specific moment inside the rift which would grow to be representative of so much more than just a teamfight win.

During the final moments of the final game of the Grand Finals of Worlds 2024, BLG seemed to have caught Zeus in the top lane for a free pick. Faker, however, quickly decided to use Galio ultimate on Zeus in order to try and save his top laner.

The move immediately looked doomed to be a mistake. Faker and Zeus were corralled into a wall by four BLG players. In the space of just a few seconds, the T1 duo somehow managed to take down BLG's Elk before Zeus himself also fell. Alone against three BLG foes, Faker did not look long for this world.

Instead, the greatest League of Legends player of all time would manage to take down Bin before making his getaway on a sliver of health. Soon afterwards, the rest of T1 arrived, cleaning house and wrapping up a fifth Worlds title for T1.

The play will go down in history as nothing short of iconic. Not only did it serve as the perfect embodiment of Faker's title of 'Unkillable Demon King', but it also played the role of greatest, and final, demonstration of the Zeus-Faker partnership at work.

Now, Zeus will be leaving T1 after back-to-back Worlds titles and three consecutive Worlds finals appearances alongside Oner, FakerGumayusi and Keria. Faker and Zeus' 2v4 play, however, will forever be remembered as the perfect ending to the 2024 League of Legends season as well as the ZOFGK era of domination.
