The prestigious League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) is set to make a grand return to China in 2025.

During an announcement regarding a sponsorship extension between Riot Games and OPPO, the company also revealed their plans to head back to China for Worlds 2025. The event will mark the third time the country hosts the biggest tournament in League of Legends and one of the most important events in esports as a whole.

A familiar home for Worlds 2025

China has long been a significant part of Worlds' legacy, with previous editions held there in 2017 and 2020. The country’s fervent esports scene and massive League of Legends fanbase have made it an ideal location for hosting the tournament.

The 2025 return follows the success of previous Chinese-hosted events, including the 2020 edition, which faced unique challenges due to the pandemic but still managed to captivate millions of viewers globally.

With plans to deliver a truly unforgettable experience, Riot aims to showcase China’s world-class venues, passionate fans, and esports culture on an even larger scale.

During the announcement, Riot promised to be delivering more information on Worlds 2025 and all host cities in the near future.

MSI 2024 - China delivers a smashing success

China are no strangers to holding League of Legends events outside of Worlds, however. Just a few months ago, the 2024 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) was held in Chengdu, China. The event was nothing short of a success, with this year's MSI offering a vibrant atmosphere as well as thrilling matches between the most elite teams in the world.

Unfortunately for all Chinese fans, they had to witness their home team of BLG fall to South Korea's Gen.G in the tournament's Grand Final.

Now, during the on-going Worlds 2024, BLG has a chance for redemption. If it's revenge against Gen.G they're after, however, they will have to find it in yet another grand finals clash.

With plans to host Worlds in 2025, China and the LPL's strongest teams will look to kick into gear in order to seize the Worlds trophy on home soil for the very first time.
