Dota 2 and League of Legends are the most famous MOBA games ever, as they both came from one ancestor, Defense of The Ancients. Both games have massive communities which are at each other’s throats. Recently, in this ever-going all-out war between the communities, Janne "Gorgc" Stefanovski, a famous Dota 2 streamer called League of Legends legendary player Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok, a noob.

The Shade

In one of Gorgc’s recent streams, his Twitch chat suggests that the unkillable demon king, Faker, makes more money than a TI winner. Startled by the comments his chat made, Grogc quickly Google to extinguish the spark.

“Are you sure about that? More than Team Spirit and OG?”  Gorgc said before googling for an answer.

As he googled the net worth of Faker, Gorgc saw the player’s tournament earnings, estimated to be around 1.4 million USD. Unsurprised with the result, the streamer commented with sarcasm:

“If you have a 1.4 million dollars earning in Dota, you’re literally a noob, compared to like TI winners.”

However, The streamer was intrigued by the demon king’s reported annual salary, which is approximately around 5 million USD.

The Facts

According to Esports Earnings, a website dedicated to tracking tournament earnings of esports players, Dota 2 players filled the top 20 on the list. Johan "N0tail" Sundstein leads the list with an impressive $7.1 million in tournament earnings.

He was part of the former OG roster, which became the first team to win The International back-to-back. His then-teammates, Jesse "JerAx" Vainikka, Anathan "ana" Pham, Sébastien "Ceb" Debs, and Topias "Topson" Taavitsainen, are behind him on the list.

The recent two-time TI champions from Team Spirit are behind the Topson. Faker is at 77th place with 1,570,297.75 USD in tournament earnings, and at 78th place is a retired Dota 2 Ren "eLeVeN" Yangwei, with 1,568,475.37 USD in tournament earnings.

Faker is widely considered the greatest player of League of Legends. He has recently won the League of Legends World Championship, similar to Dota 2's The International.

Faker has won the World Championship four times and came in second place twice. Despite his numerous accomplishments, his total earnings from tournament winnings is only approximately 1.5 million USD.

The results show the significant difference between how the two esports industries operate. In Dota 2, the best players can earn more than comfortable living with their tournament winning, but the scene is hard to break into.

However, in League of Legends, player’s contracts are more valuable than tournament-winning earnings.

Gorgc’s Thoughts

After checking the net worth of Faker, Gorgc jokingly googled his net worth. The results showed his net worth to be around 296,000 USD. Seeing his net worth, he said he only needs only fifty years of streaming to make it to TI-level earnings.

“ Only fifty years of streaming, and I will make it to TI winning level”.

The difference in the tournament prize pool shows even though a Dota 2 professional player may not achieve the pinnacle of success in the Dota 2 professional scene, their tournament winnings are comparable to the greatest players of other game titles. It also showcases the ridiculous tournament winnings a Dota 2 professional player could receive.
