Ever since League of Legends released back in 2009, the game's movement commands have always been performed tied to the mouse. That could well be changing soon, though, as new leaked images show that movement with the "WASD" keys could well be arriving soon in what might prove to be one of the biggest changes ever made to the game.

Changing Movement, Changing the Game

Admittedly, not much is known about this new WASD movement addition to League of Legends. Whether this change will arrive soon or in the distant future, whether it will affect all aspects of the game or be included solely for specific game modes, or even the exact specifics of how these new movements commands will operate; all of these things remain unclear at the time.

From the images above, we can see that a new "Modern Controls" option is being added to the in-game settings, which would allow for character movement to be controlled through the WASD keys on the keyboard, rather than through the mouse. Worthy of note is that players will still get the ability to choose which movement commands they prefer.

The implications for such a change are simply unfathomable. Being able to dodge skillshots simply by hitting a key rather than having to move away with your mouse, for instance, would make this aspect of skill expression far more accessible to newer players. Meanwhile, the possibility for new combos to be discovered appears endless.

Making the Game More Accessible

League of Legends has long proven to be a difficult game to get into for new players. From 170 total champions (and counting), and over four times as many abilities, the game is simply a lot to take in for newcomers. The addition of WASD movement commands would simplify things for players trying their hand at LoL for the first time, helping expand the game's playerbase further.

For the higher tiers of play, mouse commands should, in theory, still prove to be the more accurate form of movement going forward. Regardless of which movement commands you end up leaning towards as a player, though, the addition of WASD movement to the game would mark a clear before and after for League of Legends.
