After the immense success of Arcane, Riot Games is turning towards live-action next, with a new series seemingly already in the works. A new League of Legends story is coming to our screen, this time likely to be centered around Bilgewater.

According to a Facebook post made by the official Vietnamese page for government information, it appears that Cát Bà, in Vietnam, has already been selected as the filming location for this new Riot Games live-action series.

Masters of production

The original Facebook post, which came out on March 12th and received interactions from the official League of Legends Vietnam account as well, detailed several of the events that led to the decision to pick Vietnam for filming, and provided further insight into the project as a whole.

Vietnam's Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nguyễn Văn Hùng, met with a delegation of Riot Games representatives to discuss the possibility of filming in Vietnam on March 10th. Inside this group of people spearheading the project was none other than Rose Lam, producer of yet another acclaimed game-turned-series: The Last of Us.

Further details also confirmed that the series will be a 9-episode project, and that filming is expected to being later in 2025. Riot Games' choice to pursue the creation of a League of Legends live-action series perfectly aligns with the company's decision to create separate studios for animated and live action recreations, which they announced just last year.

Now, under the tested guidance of a producer of Rose Lam's caliber, this new live-action series will have the tall, but exciting task of living up to the standards set by Arcane's smashing success.

Set sail for Bilgewater

Riot Games reportedly scouted several other Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Thailand, before finally settling on Vietnam as the country that was best suited to bring the series to life. More specifically, it was the archipelago of Cát Bà which was seen as the best fit for the story's direction.

The region's landscape would heavily indicate that the new live-action series is headed for one of the most ruthless locations in Runeterra: Bilgewater. Indeed, the islands of Cát Bà serve as the perfect place to bring to life some of Bilgewater's, and League of Legends', most famed characters, such as Graves, Miss Fortune, or Gangplank.

Naturally, Vietnam also lends itself to represent other regions in the League of Legends universe, though. With the success of Anthony Reynolds' Ruination novel centered around Viego, it's not entirely out of the question that this new Riot Games series could take place on the Shadow Isles instead.

For now, we can only speculate. Whichever direction the show takes in the end, though, it appears Riot Games is committed to making their new project a worthy successor to Arcane.
