In response to player backlash, Riot Games has backtracked on its decision to implement a $10 charge for name changes in VALORANT and League of Legends. The reconsideration comes ahead of a significant update on November 20, which will retire Summoner Names in LoL in favor of Riot IDs. Originally, players were discontent with the notion of a $10 fee and a 365-day waiting period for name changes.

Player Outcry Leads Riot to Reconsider

The initial plan, announced a month ago, faced criticism from both VALORANT and LoL communities. Players expressed dissatisfaction with the extended waiting period and the imposed fee for altering their identities within the games. Riot Games responded by acknowledging the feedback, prompting internal discussions that ultimately led to a revision of their approach.

But, given the public backlash, they have decided to abandon the $10 fee for changing Riot IDs. When the new system goes live on November 20, players will be able to modify their Riot IDs without incurring any charges. Additionally, the waiting period for the changes has been reduced from 365 days to a more player-friendly 90 days. This change is aimed at providing players with greater flexibility and a more enjoyable experience.

For LoL players, the decision brings relief as changing their names will no longer require the expenditure of Blue Essence or RP. However, a new limitation emerges. players will no longer have the freedom to modify their names at any time. Nonetheless, all players will have the opportunity for an immediate Riot ID name change starting November 20, irrespective of any recent modifications made within the past 90 days.

Conclusion: Striking a Balance

Riot's decision to reevaluate and revise its original plan showcases a responsiveness to player feedback. Striking a balance between encouraging thoughtful decisions about identity changes and offering players flexibility, the revised system aims to enhance the overall gaming experience for both VALORANT and LoL enthusiasts.
