Spear of JD Gaming, Zhuo “knight” Ding, has departed from the Chinese organization after a year of competing with them. The 23-year-old Mid Laner departs from the roster ahead of the 2024 LPL season. Despite delivering three trophies in 2023, knight and JDG fell short of the biggest prize of the year, culminating in their self-destruction.

Collapse of the ‘Super-Team’

Like a supernova, the JDG roster burned bright throughout the year. Unfortunately, they burned out before claiming the final prize of the year, leading to a subsequent implosion. Top Laner Bai “369” Jia-Hao has already departed, headed back to Top Esports for the 2024 season. Now with knight leaving, the team is down to three superstars.

Support Lou “MISSING” Yun-Feng is set to remain until at least Nov 2024, according to his contract expiration date. However, the same cannot be said currently for their Jungler Seo “Kanavi” Jin-hyeok and AD Carry Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk.

Both of them have had their contracts already expired as of the date of this writing, and it is currently unknown if JDG has the means or desire to maintain them either. One thing is known however. The resources that this roster was given and the potential collected, meant that, unfortunately, it had been too expensive to fail. It was a team assembled to win everything, and they had fallen short (despite winning both LPL Playoffs and MSI).

Another Star into the Wild West

Much like compatriot Song “Rookie” Eui-jin, knight finds himself in the frightening unknown wasteland that is free agency in this off-season. The good news is, like Rookie, knight is also considered one of the best Mid Lane players in the world. Named by fans as a ‘1v9’ machine, he is recognized for his mechanical brilliance and carry potential.

Conclusion

Mid Laner knight moves on from JDG after a year of competing under their banner. Despite the massive hopes of the Golden Road and the collective weight and strength of the assembled talent, JDG fell just shy of their goals. It is currently unknown where knight is headed, however, it is unlikely he will remain team-less for very long.
