CS2 AnimGraph 2.0 Third Person Beta Update is finally here

Many believed it was some sort of April Fools prank, but Valve just dropped something the CS2 community has been asking for a long time. On April 1st, 2026, Counter-Strike 2 received a major beta build shipping Animgraph 2, a full upgrade to the game's animation system that touches nearly everything you see when watching other players move. And the best part? You can try it today.

What even is Animgraph 2?

Think of it as the engine that tells the game how every player should look when walking, crouching, peeking, or reloading. The original animation system in CS2 was inherited and gradually patched over time, but Animgraph 2 is a ground-up rework — and Valve has been quietly building toward it for over a year. The July 2025 update already handled first-person animations; this beta now tackles the full picture, bringing all third-person animations into the new system.

All third-person animations have been re-authored from scratch, and Valve says many of them were also adjusted in direct response to player feedback. Things that felt off when watching opponents jiggle peek or counter-strafe? Those have been addressed. On top of that, in-air crouching transitions are now smoother in both first and third-person view, and the logic that handled player height on ramps has been completely refactored.

The performance side of things

Here's where it gets really interesting for players on mid-range or older machines. Valve's stated goal with Animgraph 2 is to reduce both CPU and networking costs tied to animations. This means the game should run lighter, not heavier, after this change lands. Early benchmark results from the community back that up.

Tests run on CS2's Dust2 and Ancient FPS benchmark maps show that average frame rates stay roughly the same, but the real improvement is in 1% lows (the metric that reflects how smooth and stable the game actually feels during play). On Dust2, P1 lows jumped from 256.9 to 324 FPS in one benchmark, which is a noticeable leap in frame stability.

Players with high-end rigs have reported small FPS gains, with some going from around 400~410 to 440~450 average frames in workshop maps. The consensus from early testers is that the beta runs well, with fewer stutters and more consistent frametimes. A lot of people from the CS community assumed that more animation detail would tank performance, but Valve seems to have done the engineering work here properly.

One important heads-up: grenade lineups on sloped surfaces may have shifted, since the ramp height logic was refactored. If you have lineups tied to ramp positions, now is the time to recheck them.

How to jump into the beta

Valve made opting in pretty straightforward. Here's exactly what you need to do:

  • Open Steam and go to your Library
  • Right-click on Counter-Strike 2 and select Properties
  • Click on the Betas tab
  • In the dropdown menu, select animgraph_2_beta
  • Let the update download and launch the game

Keep in mind that while you're on the beta branch, you won't be able to connect to Valve's official servers. That means no Premier, no Competitive matchmaking, and no Deathmatch. The beta is designed for offline play, workshop maps, and community servers.

If you want to go back to your regular lobbies, just head back into the Betas tab and switch back to the default branch.
