Wraith King is a strength-based hero in Dota 2. Known for his simple mechanics and high durability, he fits well into most drafts as a position one carry. His core strength lies in his ability to come back from death instantly, forcing enemies to fight twice.

Who Is Wraith King?

Wraith King, also called Ostarion, was once a king obsessed with building a kingdom from the bones of his enemies. Seeking eternal rule, he turned to wraith energy and became something beyond life. On the night called Wraith-Night, he was reborn, trading flesh for spirit.

Now he walks the battlefield as an undead monarch. His glowing sword and skeleton army help him push lanes and dominate teamfights. Most players know him for one key reason—Reincarnation.

Key Abilities

Wraithfire Blast

Wraithfire Blast stuns and burns a target over time. It slows movement and damage ticks every second. This ability is strong early for kills and reliable later as a tool to lock down targets. If skeletons are nearby, they will swarm the affected enemy automatically.

Vampiric Spirit

This ability gives lifesteal based on attack damage. It also lets Wraith King summon skeletons by gaining charges through unit kills. These skeletons help push lanes and add extra damage during fights. They even revive once after dying.

Mortal Strike

Wraith King deals a guaranteed critical hit every few seconds. This isn’t based on chance. It works on a cooldown, so timing and attack speed matter less than burst. With armor-reduction items, Mortal Strike becomes lethal.

Reincarnation

When Wraith King dies, he revives after a few seconds. This stuns and slows enemies nearby and can summon skeletons if the right items are bought. With Aghanim’s upgrades, Reincarnation also protects allies or casts Wraithfire Blasts passively.

Best Roles for Wraith King

Wraith King works best as a carry. His lane presence is strong with a support, and his toolkit suits aggressive farming. With Reincarnation, he can frontline and force enemies to commit spells before his team follows up.

He can also act as a durable initiator or backup disabler, especially in lower-tier games where his lifesteal and ease-of-use are strong advantages.

Playing Wraith King Effectively

Early Game

Start with a Quelling Blade, Tango, and Mango. Focus on last hits and stay healthy. Use Wraithfire Blast for fights when supports initiate. One point is enough early on.

Gain Vampiric Spirit charges by killing creeps. Once you have enough, summon skeletons to push the wave or farm jungle camps faster.

Keep mana high. Reincarnation has a steep cost in the early game, so save Magic Stick charges or use Clarity when farming.

Mid Game

Pick up Radiance or Desolator depending on enemy lineups. Radiance helps with farming and pressure. Desolator boosts your skeleton and crit damage.

Armlet of Mordiggian is a good damage item. It syncs well with Vampiric Spirit for healing and with Mortal Strike for big hits. Blink Dagger adds mobility and lets you start fights or escape after reviving.

Keep farming but group when needed. Your first death in a fight should slow and distract enemies, letting your team take control.

Late Game

Build Assault Cuirass for armor and team buffs. Black King Bar protects you from stuns and mana burns. Heart of Tarrasque adds staying power.

Use Overwhelming Blink to enter fights with a strong slow and damage. If needed, Refresher Orb or Divine Rapier can give you a second Reincarnation or major damage spike.

Try not to die last. Reincarnation is most useful when you die first, so the slow helps your team follow up.

Skeleton Army Tips

  • Skeletons spawn from Vampiric Spirit and Reincarnation.

  • They auto-attack and cannot be controlled.

  • Casting Wraithfire Blast makes them focus the stunned target.

  • They revive once when killed.

  • Avoid summoning them near heroes with cleave or AoE nukes.

  • They don’t block camps and can push lanes alone if left unchecked.

Common Weaknesses

Wraith King is vulnerable to:

  • Mana burn: Heroes like Anti-Mage or items like Diffusal Blade can stop Reincarnation if you lack Aghanim’s Shard.

  • Break effects: Heroes like Viper or Shadow Demon can disable lifesteal and crits.

  • High burst: Without Reincarnation, Wraith King struggles to stay alive under heavy spell pressure.

Talent Choices

  • Level 10: Take +10% lifesteal to improve lane sustain.

  • Level 15: Choose bonus skeleton attack damage.

  • Level 20: +5 minimum skeletons helps push lanes harder.

  • Level 25: Reincarnation casting Wraithfire Blast offers better teamfight impact.

Item Notes

Core Items:

  • Phase Boots: Speed and damage boost.

  • Radiance or Desolator: Farming or armor reduction.

  • Armlet of Mordiggian: Strong mid-game power spike.

  • Blink Dagger: Improves gap closing.

Late Game Items:

  • Black King Bar: Avoid disables.

  • Assault Cuirass: Buffs allies and skeletons.

  • Heart of Tarrasque: Makes you hard to kill.

Situational Items:

  • Silver Edge: Break enemy passives.

  • Abyssal Blade: Lock down targets.

  • Refresher Orb: Double Reincarnation.

  • Divine Rapier: Extreme late-game damage.

Final Thoughts

Wraith King is simple to learn and effective in most Dota 2 matches. His ability to return from death shifts the flow of teamfights. Build items that suit your enemy, time your deaths well, and always watch your mana. When played right, Wraith King is more than just a skeleton—he’s a game-ender.
