Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok has announced his plans to take a break. The acclaimed Top Laner will not be playing in the upcoming 2024 LPL Spring Split. This announcement marks a massive blow for Weibo Gaming, who is still coming off an incredible high of a runner-up finish at Worlds 2023. Furthermore, TheShy was an incredibly integral part of their run and his absence will be keenly noted.

TheShy seeks Mental Restart

In his recent Weibo account post, TheShy detailed the reasons for his decision to not play in the upcoming Spring Split. Despite performing for 2 years on the Weibo Gaming (WBG) roster and playing a crucial role in landing WBG in the Grand Finals of Worlds 2023; he cited disappointment in the end results.

The following is translated using Google Translate:

“In the two years of 2022 and 2023, I was very happy to spend time with WBG, and I am truly grateful to WBG. I originally wanted to achieve better results with my teammates in this World Championship, but the results were not that ideal. I feel that I did not perform well enough and feel guilty. So I want to take a break and use this rest time to adjust my physical and mental state. If given the chance, I will try my best to meet everyone with a new look in the summer split. I sincerely thank all Weibo staff, teammates, and coaches. I am also very grateful to my fans who have always supported me. Finally, I hope everyone can spend a healthy and meaningful day.”

A Redemption Arc Too Late

In 2017, TheShy debuted in the LPL for the first time, playing under Invictus Gaming. He quickly gained attention for his innovative and bold champion picks, successfully redefining what it means to play in the Top Lane. A year after joining, TheShy won his Worlds title. Furthermore, by this point he had entered conversations for one of the best players in the world, showcasing a performance peak that at the time, was astonishing to witness.

Fast forward to 2023 and TheShy is now a shadow of his former self in reputation. Despite still occasionally showing the champion pedigree he was once known for showing so consistently, he had now earned a different legacy, one of poor statistical performances. In the majority of games that he played for Weibo Gaming, even in 2023, he was going negative in K/D (Kill to Death).

Entering into Worlds 2023, few had high or even much expectations of TheShy. He was now considered too much of a coinflip and a high risk to bet on. However, both TheShy and Weibo Gaming surprised everyone by making it to the Grand Finals. Granted, their ascent all the way to the Semifinals was considered disingenuous by most, having only beaten Western teams to make it that far. However, their Semifinals performance against BLG changed the whole narrative.

For the first time in years, TheShy looked like himself again. In a fierce battle of attrition, Weibo and BLG traded blow for blow. Despite the finals being a somewhat disappointing end to what was otherwise an incredible run, TheShy had managed to solidify himself once more as a powerhouse talent in the LPL

Conclusion

TheShy has announced his plans to take a break ahead of the upcoming 2024 LPL Spring Split. Despite a strong resurgence of form, he revealed a dissatisfaction with the results achieved and has sought a break in an attempt to reset mentally and physically.
