The semifinal match between T1 and Gen.G at Worlds 2024 reached historic heights, shattering viewership records with a peak of over 4.97 million peak viewers.

This staggering number places it as the most-watched non-finals match in League of Legends history and secures it within the top five most-watched esports events ever, further highlighting Faker and T1's ability to draw massive global audiences.

An unparalleled viewership surge at Worlds 2024

The T1 vs Gen.G matchup surpassed the previous viewership peak at Worlds 2024, which was held by the quarterfinal match between T1 and Top Esports, by more than 1.3 million viewers. This increase is particularly impressive given the competitive landscape of this year’s Worlds, where nearly every T1 game in the tournament attracted enormous attention.

T1’s clash against TES brought in 3.61 million viewers, while their Swiss Stage face-off against G2 saw 3.01 million peak viewers, confirming that the iconic organization commands an enduring and unrivaled global fanbase.

However, it was their match against Gen.G that truly ignited viewership, thanks to the historic rivalry between these two powerhouses as well as the weight of the stakes. With T1 facing off against an LCK rival which they had not defeated in a series a single time all year long, a staggering 4.97 million people tuned in to watch that Faker and T1 magic at work against Gen.G at Worlds 2024.

Below is the complete list of the top 5 most watched matches at Worlds 2024, according to peak viewership:

  1. T1 vs GEN.G (Semifinals)  – 4.97 million peak viewers
  2. T1 vs Top Esports (Quarterfinals)  – 3.61 million peak viewers
  3. FlyQuest vs GEN.G (Quarterfinals)  – 3.53 million peak viewers
  4. T1 vs G2 Esports (Swiss Stage)  – 3.01 million peak viewers
  5. T1 vs Top Esports (Swiss Stage)  – 2.82 million peak viewers

Top viewership moments in esports history

The 4.97 million viewership peak is second only to a handful of esports events globally, including the 2023 Worlds final between T1 and WBG, which recorded a mind-blowing 6.4 million peak viewers.

With this latest achievement, the T1 vs Gen.G semifinal has joined a prestigious list of the top five most-watched events in esports history. The ranks are as follows:

  1. T1 vs. WBG Worlds 2023 Finals (League of Legends) – 6.4 million peak viewers
  2. Free Fire World Series 2021 Singapore Finals (Free Fire) – 5.41 million peak viewers
  3. T1 vs. DRX Worlds 2022 Finals (League of Legends) – 5.15 million peak viewers
  4. M5 World Championship Grand Finals (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang) – 5.07 million peak viewers
  5. T1 vs. Gen.G Worlds 2024 Semi-Finals (League of Legends) – 4.97 million peak viewers

This extraordinary achievement reflects both the global appeal of the T1 organization, the greatest League of Legends player of all time in Faker, and the enduring competitive allure of their rivalry with Gen.G, a team that has often been their fiercest domestic rival.

With T1 set to face off against the Chinese powerhouse of Bilibili Gaming (BLG) in the grand final of Worlds 2024, everything seems to indicate we might have a new most watched esports match before the end of the week.
