After leaving their mark on the gaming industry over the last decade, Riot Games has now ventured into card games. Earlier today, they announced Project K, a new physical trading card game based on the League of Legends universe.

What is Project K?

Introduced by Chengran Chan, Executive Producer and Dave Guskin, the Game Director, Project K “is a League IP game that deeply serves the need of a different kind of audience. Players who want to connect across the table and immerse themselves in the gameplay, setting and characters they love.”

The game will be completely distinct from Legends of Runeterra, a pre-existing digital collectible card game from Riot Games, but will inherit from its rich design philosophy and art.

The announcement video also emphasizes on Project K being a social multiplayer, the players will have the ability to be play the game as a 1v1, 2v2, free for all and more. Similar to other TCGs, the new game will also have a collectible element with more cards and variants produced down the line.

The announcement video also showcases four decks that players can play in Project K:

  • Viktor
  • Volibear
  • Yasuo Calm Chaos
  • Jinx Fury Chaos Tempo Aggro

These cards, the decks and the interactions are based on the characters and their themes from the League IP.

As part of Project K’s promotions, Riot Games will also exhibit trial decks and the sale of a special edition Chinese Arcane box set at Teamfight Tactics Macao Open starting December 13. The English version of the Arcane box set will be coming to the official merch store in 2025.

How can you play Project K?

A big part of developing a TCG is to create a community for the game to thrive on. In order to ensure the community grows, Riot Games will invest into promotional content in store, regular events and competitions that start at a local level.

The team behind Project K wants to create a competitive ecosystem that extends from local stores to one day Global stage. To ensure a smooth and rich experience from the get go, Riot Games will seek local partners who'd be willing to procure cards and gear for the game.

With everything needing a set up, Project K will see a ‘staggered’ release around the world starting with China in early 2025. Riot Games is already working to find partners globally and the details for the global launch will be announced soon.
