LNG Esports is reportedly seeking to bring JD Gaming's midlaner Zeng "Yagao" Qi into their roster for Worlds 2024, replacing Scout, who is currently facing a travel ban.

According to reports from Chinese, Korean and Spanish sources, LNG has submitted a request to Riot Games and the LPL (League of Legends Pro League) for permission to make the substitution but is still awaiting an official decision.

Rulebook conflicts and timeline concerns for LNG

Under the 2024 Worlds rulebook, teams were required to finalize their rosters, including substitutes, by August 16. LNG has already named substitutes for the top and jungle roles, but they lack a backup midlaner, increasing concerns around whether Riot Games will grant an exception for the late substitution or not.

The debate revolves around when LNG became aware of Scout’s travel ban. EDG’s manager claims Scout knew about the travel restrictions after the Spring Split, while LNG only found out after the regional qualifiers. Meanwhile, Scout’s agency insists they informed LNG as soon as Scout attempted to travel to Korea for a vacation. The lack of a clear timeline adds to the controversy.

Community reactions and fairness debate

Fans have expressed frustration on the upcoming Yagao's participation, raising concerns about fairness. Many argue that LNG should have anticipated Scout’s travel issues earlier and taken preventative measures. There is widespread criticism that allowing such a late substitution could be unfair, especially given the potential impact the new player could have on the tournament.

While LNG considered other players, such as Shad0w, they ultimately decided Yagao was the best fit to replace Scout. The final approval from JD Gaming, Yagao’s current team, is still pending, with an official decision expected soon.

Yagao’s background and expectations

Yagao is a top-tier midlaner for JD Gaming and a veteran in the League of Legends Pro League (LPL). Known for his versatility, he has been very important in JDG’s success, helping the team secure multiple titles and appearances at Worlds. His playstyle and map awareness have earned him the nickname "Yagoat" among fans when he's at his best.

However, Yagao’s recent performance has been inconsistent, particularly with the shift to the AD midlane meta. Some fans even question whether he can regain his top form in time for Worlds, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his potential substitution.

LDG's chances at Worlds hanging by a thread

If Yagao’s substitution is approved, his presence could have a significant impact on LNG’s performance at Worlds 2024. However, the fairness of the move continues to be a point of contention within the esports community.

With Riot Games, the LPL, and JDG's decision pending, the outcome could shape the competitive landscape for this year’s World Championship.
