Arguably the best player in VALORANT’s short history, Leo "Leo" Jannesson has announced his departure from competitive play via FNATIC’s X handle.

The decision to step away from competition comes on the back of a long-standing battle with long COVID, a serious health challenge that affects both physical performance and mental well-being.

A Short but Storied Career

Initially playing under the Guild Esports banner, Leo made a name for himself with his clutch potential. He was signed by FNATIC for the inaugural VCT 2023 alongside Chronicle to create an EMEA superteam.

The team, also featuring Alfajer, Boaster, and Derke, lived up to the title as they dominated the 32-team VCT 2023: LOCK//IN and the following VCT 2023: Masters Tokyo. Leo was the MVP of LOCK//IN and the second-best player for FNATIC at Tokyo. Despite not ending the year with a Champions trophy, Leo was considered one of the best—if not the best—players of the competitive year.

After the first year with FNATIC, many, including mini, considered Leo a near-perfect player, someone who played the game at a level only a few could even dream of.

A Huge Loss

2024 started rough for FNATIC as they missed the first international tournament of the year. The team did win EMEA Stage 1, but Leo was already struggling. These issues only worsened at Shanghai, leading to an early exit for FNATIC and Leo taking a break from competition, missing the rest of the year.

Despite his initial intention to return in 2025, Leo could not continue competing, missing the entire season.

This long-standing battle with an excruciating condition has now led to Leo’s decision to completely step away from VALORANT—a cruel and abrupt conclusion to what could’ve been the career of the greatest player to ever touch the game.

The early retirement is not just a massive loss for FNATIC but also for fans of the game, who had hoped to see Leo back in action. As he steps away from the competitive stage, the VALORANT community can only thank him for the unforgettable moments he gave to the game. His impact on FNATIC, EMEA, and the global scene will be remembered for years to come. We wish Leo the best in his recovery and hope he finds health, peace, and happiness beyond the server.
