How to Play Overwatch 2 D.Va: Backstory, Abilities, Guide, and More
D.Va is a tank hero in Overwatch 2, notably recognized for her conspicuous pink mech and mobility. She was part of the first wave of heroes that came with Overwatch’s release back in May 2016 and remains one of the most popular heroes to this day.
D.Va Backstory
Hana Song is a pilot for the MEKA program in her home country of South Korea. A professional gamer turned ace pilot and mechanic, Song – codenamed D.Va – was the #1 ranked player in the game Mecha Guardian V.
When her country came under attack by the omnics, the drone-control network in place was quickly disrupted, forcing the military to look for creative alternatives to serve as their new pilots.
As the few suitable candidates with the necessary reflexes and instincts to operate the mech’s advanced weapons systems, Song found herself drafted. Her intense competitiveness and incredible skills translated well into her new role as an armored mech operator, and she now flourishes as an extremely effective pilot.

D.Va Hero Abilities and Guide
D.Va is a high-mobility tank with a great deal of flexibility and ability to dart in and around fights. She is especially strong at 1-on-1s thanks to her Defense Matrix. She is also fairly unique as one of the only 3 heroes with a secondary form, the other 2 being Wrecking Ball and Ramattra.
D.Va (Mech Mode)
- Fusion Cannons (LMB)
- Infinite shotgun-like bullets.
- Slower movement speed while firing.
- Defense Matrix (RMB)
- Destroys all incoming projectiles while active (In direction D.Va is facing).
- Fusion Cannons cannot be fired while Defense Matrix is active.
- Boosters (LSHIFT)
- Launch into the air.
- Controllable for duration.
- Can collide with and deal damage to enemy heroes while active.
- Boosters can be activated while Defense Matrix is active.
- Micro Missiles (E)
- Fire a volley of missiles in a straight line.
- Hits the first solid target
- Micro Missiles can be fired while Defense Matrix is active.
- Self-Destruct (Q)
- D.Va’s Ultimate.
- Eject from the mech. The mech will automatically detonate after a few seconds, dealing massive damage in an explosion to the surrounding area.

D.Va (Human Mode)
- Light Gun (LMB)
- Equip a pistol (no damage falloff).
- Call Mech (Q)
- Call in a new mech. It’s arrival can deal damage on impact.
- Va will still need to return to the mech to complete the transition back to her other mode.
In Overwatch 2, D.Va is typically played like a frontline tank, with a large health pool and the ability to draw and negate incoming damage thanks to her Defensive Matrix. Boosters is multi-functional and one of her best abilities, allowing her to quickly reposition, gap-close, and chase key targets.
Self-Destruct has the potential to be one of the strongest round-changers in the game, however, it is incredibly telegraphed, and players will often have to find creative ways of securing the damage from the ultimate, whether by flank or combos with other hero ultimates/abilities.
D.Va’s unique mechanic comes from her dual form. Spawning in Mech Mode, when the Mech is destroyed either via damage or Self-Destruct, D.Va will emerge in Human Mode and can resummon her mech after enough Ultimate Charge has been earned. D.Va's human form is squishy with a far smaller health pool. However, it is also a great deal nimbler and quicker, allowing D.Va to dart in and around the battlefield.
D.Va Best Combos
D.Va’s Self-Destruct works exceptionally well with a large number of heroes when their ultimates are used in concert, thanks to the massive amount of guaranteed damage when chained correctly. Some of the most popular hero pairings include Reinhardt’s Earthshatter, Mei’s Blizzard, and Zarya’s Graviton Surge.
The easiest way to identify suitable combos is to look for strong CC (crowd-control) abilities that will allow D.Va to better secure a guaranteed pick off her ultimate. Besides that, Mercy and Lucio have always been solid picks to pair with D.Va. Mercy’s ability to keep D.Va topped up and follow her high mobility makes it a deadly pairing. Lucio’s Crossfade – Speed Boost allows the mech to fly into enemy strongholds at breakneck speeds, amplifying the immediate threat D.Va can provide to the enemy backlines in dive comps.

D.Va Counters
Strong Against
D.Va works as an incredibly good answer into flyers thanks to her Boosters, making her a solid reply against Pharah and Echo in particular, especially when pocketed with a Mercy on her. Backline snipers such as Widowmaker and Ashe also struggle against D.Va thanks to her large health pool and high mobility. Once you get these 2 in your sights, running them down becomes a satisfying endeavor.
Weak Against
D.Va does not have an especial answer into many of the other tanks, meaning she either goes even or slightly loses against many, depending on the pilot’s skill on both ends. However, Zarya and Reinhardt in particular have an easier time into her. Zarya’s Particle Cannon is not blocked by D.Va’s Defense Matrix. Neither is Reinhardt’s Rocket Hammer. This makes D.Va particularly easier to farm Ultimate charge against, while rendering one of her best tools far less useful on the frontlines.
More than that, D.Va is also susceptible to several Damage Heroes in particular. Reaper and Mei have a much easier time dealing with her. D.Va’s rather short-ranged Fusion Cannons puts her into retaliation range for both heroes. Reaper in particular can shred through D.Va’s health pool extremely quickly as well as chase down the Human Mode after the mech goes down.
