Lina is a high-damage ranged intelligence hero in Dota 2. Known as the Slayer, she can deal strong magical bursts early and transition into a right-clicking semi-carry later. Her toolkit includes area stuns, wave nukes, and a powerful single-target ultimate. Explore effective Dota 2 Lina strategies for mid, support, and carry roles with optimized abilities, builds, and gameplay tips.

Lina’s Role in a Match

Lina works well as a support, midlaner, or semi-carry. Her strong laning, nukes, and Fiery Soul passive allow her to scale into different roles depending on team needs. She starts with high kill potential and gains speed and power with every spell cast.

Abilities and Usage

Dragon Slave

Lina fires a wave of fire in front of her. It’s her main tool for wave-clear, harass, and poke damage. Use it to farm creeps, pressure enemies, and scout terrain. At max level with buffs, it deals significant damage over time.

Dragon Slave is useful for securing last hits and applying pressure during the laning phase. You can also use it to hit fleeing enemies or deliver damage safely when retreating. Combined with Fiery Soul, it builds attack speed for Lina’s next moves.

Light Strike Array

This is Lina’s stun. It has a slight delay, so you need to predict movement. Great for setting up kills or defending against initiators.

Light Strike Array becomes more reliable with Eul’s Scepter, which lifts enemies for an easy follow-up stun. It interrupts channeled spells, clears trees, and offers good zoning. Aim it carefully to control team fights or escape attempts.

Fiery Soul

Each spell hit gives Lina bonus attack and move speed. This makes her dangerous in longer fights, especially when chaining spells. With Aghanim’s Shard, she also gains flat ability damage per stack.

Keeping Fiery Soul active boosts your damage output and movement. Use spells as soon as they’re available to refresh stacks. In fights, this lets you fire off high-speed attacks and reposition faster than most heroes. This passive also scales into late-game, making her viable as a hybrid carry.

Flame Cloak (Scepter Upgrade)

Gives Lina flying movement, spell damage boost, and magic resistance. Also sets her Fiery Soul stacks to max on cast.

Flame Cloak is useful before team fights or to reposition across terrain. It allows Lina to fly over obstacles and gain durability through resistance while increasing her burst potential. Used before casting Laguna Blade, it significantly boosts damage.

Laguna Blade

Lina’s ultimate deals heavy single-target damage. With Aghanim’s upgrades, it pierces spell immunity and deals pure damage.

Laguna Blade can secure early kills, especially against squishy heroes. It's best used early in fights rather than waiting for the perfect moment. Use it in quick bursts with other spells to overwhelm enemies before they react.

Role Strategies

Mid Lane Semi-Carry

Mid Lina focuses on harassment and rune control early. She pressures enemy mids with Dragon Slave and long-range right-clicks. Once she gets a few levels, she can roam for kills using Eul’s and stun combos.

She often builds Bottle to control runes and sustain mana, then moves into items like Eul’s Scepter, Boots of Travel, and Black King Bar. Items like Daedalus or Revenant’s Brooch allow her to add physical burst in the late game.

This Lina deals both magical and physical damage. She shines in skirmishes and ganks. Transition into right-click items to stay relevant late game. Good positioning is key, as she has no natural escape.

Support Lina

As a support, Lina is useful in early ganks and fights. She needs few items and contributes with stuns and damage. Focus on spell use, not right-clicks.

She usually starts with Arcane Boots and builds into Aether Lens, Force Staff, or Glimmer Cape. Aghanim’s Scepter adds more impact if she needs to scale later. Use Dragon Slave to harass, zone, or steal creep stacks.

Positioning and map awareness are important for support Lina. She is fragile but has the tools to catch opponents off guard. In fights, her role is to provide control and burst down weaker targets.

Ability Builds

Max Dragon Slave first for wave clear and poke. Take one early point in Fiery Soul to boost attack speed after spell casts. Level Light Strike Array second to increase stun duration. Laguna Blade should be leveled whenever available.

For mid Lina, the ability order often starts with Dragon Slave, followed by Light Strike Array, and then Fiery Soul. Dragon Slave is prioritized to deal the most damage possible. Stuns are taken next to secure kills, and Fiery Soul provides mobility and attack speed as the fight goes on.

For support Lina, Light Strike Array may be taken earlier to offer crowd control in early engagements. Dragon Slave is still maxed for wave-clear and damage.

Talents

Lina’s talents support both burst and scaling. At level 10, she can choose between bonus attack damage or reducing Dragon Slave cooldown. By level 15, she may gain extra health or boost Light Strike Array’s damage. At level 20, Lina can take extra Fiery Soul stacks or improve Laguna Blade’s scaling. By level 25, she may pick between critical damage against Dragon Slave targets or reducing Laguna Blade’s cooldown significantly.

Talent choices depend on your role. A mid or carry Lina may choose damage-focused options, while support Lina benefits more from utility and cooldown reduction.

Itemization Guide

Lina has many flexible item paths. Here’s how to approach it:

Starting:

  • Tango
  • Null Talisman
  • Clarity
  • Boots of Speed

Early Game:

  • Bottle (mid)
  • Arcane Boots (support)
  • Witch Blade
  • Force Staff

Mid Game:

  • Eul’s Scepter (setup and mana regen)
  • Black King Bar (survivability)
  • Aghanim’s Scepter (Flame Cloak and pure Laguna Blade)
  • Hurricane Pike (range boost)

Late Game:

  • Daedalus or Revenant’s Brooch (physical damage)
  • Scythe of Vyse (disable)
  • Wind Waker or Blink Dagger (mobility)
  • Parasma or Gleipnir (synergy with Fiery Soul)

Situational:

  • Silver Edge (disables passives)
  • Dagon (burst follow-up)
  • Ethereal Blade (magic boost or defense)
  • Satanic (lifesteal for carry Lina)

Pick items based on the game’s pace and your build. Keep your mana needs in mind—Lina can burn through it fast.

Final Tips

Lina is strong early and can carry late if farmed. She depends on skill use and timing. Fiery Soul rewards active casting, so keep using spells even outside fights. Secure vision, land stuns, and choose items that support either burst magic or sustained physical DPS.

Lina punishes mistakes. If played right, she controls fights in Dota 2 with speed, range, and pure firepower.
