Complexity Bows Out of the Competitive CS2 Scene After Two Decades
In a surprising decision, Complexity Gaming has officially announced its withdrawal from the competitive CS2 scene. The move marks the first time since 2014 that the North American esports organization will be without a Counter-Strike roster, ending a legacy that began in 2004. CEO Jason Lake delivered the announcement via a video on X, citing severe economic challenges as the driving factor.
Economic Struggles Force the Exit
Despite a strong run in 2023 and 2024, Complexity’s ambitions were thwarted by the harsh realities of the 2025 esports economy. Sponsorship shortages in North America and shrinking revenues left the organization unable to sustain the financial demands of maintaining a tier-one Counter-Strike team.
“We have tried everything and turned over every rock, searched for investment and revenue, but it’s just been an incredibly difficult time economically.”
He emphasized that while the team could have prolonged its stay, the decision was made to prioritize the players’ futures and ensure the division transitioned the right way.
Legacy of Achievements
Over its two-decade-long Counter-Strike journey, Complexity amassed a remarkable history in NACS. The team claimed tournament victories at ESWC 2005, CPL Summer 2006, and most recently, ESL Challenger Jönköping 2024. Since then, however, the organization has seen little success in the Tier-1 scene, placing 17th-19th at the Perfect World Shanghai Major, and going even lower at the BLAST.tv Austin Major, finishing at 28th-30th place.

Complexity was also one of the oldest active names in the scene, having survived multiple competitive eras. Backed by significant investments over the years, including the 2017 majority stake purchase by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and later reacquisition by Lake in 2024 for $10.36 million, Complexity consistently held a respected status within Counter-Strike esports.
Players Transition to Passion UA
Complexity’s departure does not spell an end for its roster, however. Four of the players, Johnny "JT" Theodosiou, Michael "Grim" Wince, Håkon "hallzerk" Fjærli, and Nick "nicx" Lee, have already been acquired by Passion UA, joining Vladyslav "Kvem" Korol to complete the lineup. The team will also reunite with long-time coach Tiaan "T.c" Coertzen, who transitioned to Passion UA earlier in 2025. Their official debut under the new banner is scheduled for August 29 at DraculaN Season 1, where they will compete with inherited tournament invites and rankings from their Complexity tenure.
Jason Lake has ruled out an immediate return to Counter-Strike, stressing that financial stability is a prerequisite for any potential comeback. For now, Complexity fans must bid farewell to a celebrated chapter in esports history.
