Welcome to Strafe - Your resource for League of Legends Tournaments

League of Legends, designed and created by Riot Games, is more than just a game. It has established itself as an esports titan on a global scale. With its naturally established tournament ecosystem, League has a competitive infrastructure that features some of the most talented teams from every region, competing for fame and glory on the famed Summoner's rift.

From ranked matchmaking to the Worlds stage, tournaments for League of Legends represent a top tier of strategic navigation, applied theory, and player adaptation to each tournament meta. Tournaments capture millions of watcher hours over each split and regional events, with major competitive tournaments like, Worlds, MSI, etc., being internationally followed events. Competitive League of Legends is at the heart of modern-day esports.

The following sections will reveal the inner workings of how tournaments operate, the reasoning that supports them, and the impact they leave on the history of League of Legends.

Riot-Organized Global Tournaments

Riot Games has established a couple of international events, the major events the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) and the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds). These tournaments are organized and established to bring the best teams from all major regions i.e., LCS, LEC, etc into one space wherein a champion would crown themselves the best team in the world and each event promotes its champions teams competing internationally, bringing a global atmosphere to each event.

MSI, takes place at the mid-season of the League of Legends Season, and highlights the strength of each meta the different regions play in their leagues and will pit several of the top teams against each other. Worlds, which takes place at the end of year, is the most prestigious event in LOL esports, and will feature a play-in stage, a swiss stage, and a knockout stage.

Each of these events stands as a testament and level of commitment that Riot Games holds to the competitive and international scene of League of Legends esports, which stands for one of the main foundations of their brand.

Regional Leagues: LCS, LEC, LCK, LPL and Beyond

The League of Legends esports ecosystem is centered around major regional leagues: LCS (North America), LEC (Europe), LCK (Korea), and LPL (China), while other leagues also exist, such as the PCS.

All of these leagues operate with a split format, generally consisting of a Winter Season, Spring Season and a Summer Season and typically a weekly schedule, with the results ultimately determining playoff positions and international seedings. These leagues provide the pathway toward regional pride and the first step toward qualification for MSI and Worlds.

Whether its the coordinated gameplay explosive in the LCK or unpredictable chaos exemplified by the LCS, regional play enshrines the meta and builds the rivalries that underpin global competition.

Tournament Formats & Scoring Systems

Similar to other competitive tournaments, League of Legends tournaments utilize a variety of competitive systems to promote an atmosphere that maintains both fairness and excitement. Earlier stages of tournaments will often employ either a Swiss or round-robin format; while the playoff stage will employ a single or double elimination bracket.

Each match will be determined either by best-of-one, best-of-three, or by best-of-five, depending on the stage of the tournament. Tournament progression is based on win-loss records, game statistics, and tiebreaker policies. Occasionally, higher seeded teams may have both bracket advantages and side selections.

These formats create a good balance between competition and entertainment - with the format, rewarding consistency while allowing for unexpected outcomes, such as the legendary reverse sweep.

Community & Third-Party Tournaments

In addition to Riot’s official leagues, other tournaments organized by the community and third parties are also a huge part of the LoL competitive ecosystem. Tournaments hosted through different platforms, like Red Bull Solo Q, Faceit, Battlefy, and Twitch Rivals, are available for amateur players, college teams, and streamers.

Events typically use an open qualifier process, local LAN events, and some unique formats to promote grassroots interest and fan participation. With increasing prize support, these events provide a way for talent to develop and the ecosystem to remain alive in addition to what is taking place on the high tier of play.

For many, it is the first step toward playing in the big leagues.

How Teams Qualify for Major Events

Teams qualify into international competitions like MSI and Worlds based on their performance in their respective regional league(s). Most times, the best teams from the Spring and Summer Split finals will earn an automatic qualifier; depending on the circumstance, some will either compete in the regional qualification rounds or seek wildcard entry. Typically the top 3 teams from each region qualify to the main event, with some outliers in place for the 4th seeds from select regions.

These differently structured roads allow each region to reach the international stage with the most consistently competitive teams.
