The Group D of ESL Pro League Season 20 went largely as expected, with the bigger teams advancing smoothly and avoiding any major upsets.

Group D Upper Bracket: Team Vitality & Liquid

Fresh from their triumph at IEM Cologne, Team Vitality stormed through the upper bracket, leaving little room for doubt about their current form. They made quick work of ATOX Esports and FURIA showcasing a level of dominance that few could contest. The only team that managed to dent their armor was the North Americans in the upper bracket final, who managed to take a map off the Vitality juggernaut.

Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut once again proved why he is one of the best in the world, shining alongside his captain Dan "apEX" Madesclaire to dominate the group’s stats leaderboard. Their combined efforts secured Vitality a seamless path into the playoffs, reinforcing their status as a top contender.

Team Liquid, under the leadership of Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken, has shown significant improvement since Twistzz took on the in-game leader role. Their path through the upper bracket saw them claim convincing victories against ENCE and Virtus.Pro, earning them a shot at the top against Vitality.

Despite fighting back in the direst situations, they ultimately fell short against the European powerhouse. Nevertheless, Liquid heads into the playoffs with newfound confidence and a clear intention to make a deep run in the tournament.

Group D Middle Bracket: Virtus.Pro

The middle bracket quickly turned into a battleground after Virtus.Pro was knocked down by Liquid. With Team Falcons, FURIA, and VP locked in a fierce struggle for a single playoff spot, the matches became some of the most intense in Group D. In fact, four out of five series went the full distance, with all three maps needed to determine a winner.

Dzhami "Jame" Ali and his team seemed destined for an early exit after a sluggish start, but they managed to flip the narrative. Securing wins against both Falcons and FURIA, they clinched their playoff spot in a dramatic fashion after reverse sweeping the Brazilians. Despite this hard-fought qualification, concerns linger about their future, especially given the level of talent on their roster.

It’s safe to say that Virtus.Pro has found the transition to the new MR12 format challenging. Their slow, methodical playstyle, which often involves playing the clock, hasn't meshed well with the reduced number of rounds and tighter economic considerations. This adjustment period has been clear in their recent performances, leaving questions about their ability to adapt in time for the upcoming Major.

Group D Lower Bracket: FURIA Esports

FURIA's journey through the lower bracket began after they suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Vitality and Virtus.Pro. However, they were not ready to bow out just yet. Demonstrating grit and determination, they clawed their way back, emerging from the lower bracket to secure a place in the playoffs.

While FURIA has yet to make a lasting impact on the international stage, they have solidified their reputation as one of the best teams from South America. Their victories over Red Canids on two separate occasions in a sweet rivalry between the Brazilian legends and ex-teammates Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo and Marcelo "coldzera" David proved so.

With their advancement to the round of 16, FURIA has now secured their fourth playoff appearance in major events this year. This consistent performance bodes well for the roster as they gear up for the Americas RMR, where they aim to earn a spot at the Perfect World Shanghai Major in the months ahead.

ESL Pro League Season 20 Playoffs Bracket

As we head into the playoffs, the spotlight will be on these teams to see who can sustain their momentum and who might crack under the mounting pressure.
