Taliyah, a nomadic mage from Shurima in League of Legends, balances the wonder of youth with the weight of responsibility. Born into the Naasaj culture of desert weavers and herders, her unique connection with stone set her apart. Her bond with the earth shaped her path in ways she couldn’t have foreseen, leading her to discover both her inner strength and the dangers of her power. Her story is one of struggle, triumph, and an unyielding desire to protect her homeland and loved ones.

Early Life of Taliyah in the Naasaj

Taliyah’s story begins in the southern deserts of Shurima, near the border of Icathia. Raised among the Naasaj, her childhood was steeped in traditions of weaving and herding. Yet, Taliyah’s fascination always lay beneath the surface—literally—with the rocks and stones of the desert. Her childhood curiosity was seen as both a blessing and a potential danger, as her powers remained untamed. Despite this, her people cherished her as one of their own, hopeful that her path would eventually bring unity to their people.

At six years old, her innate connection to the earth revealed itself. While rescuing a goat stranded on a cliff, her touch caused the rock to erupt, sending her and the animal tumbling. Though she survived, the experience marked the beginning of her struggle with an overwhelming and unpredictable power. This event left her feeling both awed by her abilities and afraid of their consequences. It became a defining moment in her life, shaping her journey of self-discovery and growth.

The Naasaj’s elder, Babajan, reassured her family, interpreting this connection as a blessing from the Great Weaver. However, when Taliyah’s coming-of-age dance under the full moon revealed the uncontrollable extent of her abilities, she became convinced her powers were a curse. This belief led her to feel isolated despite the Naasaj's acceptance. Her struggle with self-doubt pushed her to seek answers far beyond the borders of her home.

A Journey Across Valoran

Determined to master her abilities and avoid harming her loved ones, Taliyah left the Naasaj. Her travels took her through the rugged landscapes of Valoran, including encounters with Noxian soldiers. Initially deceived by their promises of mentorship, she discovered their true intentions when they demanded she use her powers to destroy a village. Her refusal was a testament to her moral resolve, even in the face of danger. This act of defiance strengthened her resolve to use her powers for good, no matter the cost.

A turning point came when Taliyah encountered Yasuo, an Ionian exile with his own burdens. Their meeting began with a literal avalanche but evolved into a bond of mutual growth. Yasuo’s guidance helped Taliyah gain control of her stone magic, transforming her chaotic abilities into a powerful force of creation. Their connection went beyond teacher and student, as Yasuo became a source of comfort and a reminder of her own resilience.

Return to Shurima

By her late teens, Taliyah’s journey brought her back to Shurima. Upon encountering the recently risen Great City of Shurima, she felt the anguish etched into its stones—echoes of Azir’s failed Ascension and Xerath’s betrayal. This experience connected her deeply to the history of her homeland, forging a stronger sense of purpose within her. Taliyah realized that understanding the past was essential to protecting her people’s future.

Her return also involved aiding key figures in Shuriman lore. She rescued Sivir, a descendant of Azir, from Xerath’s wrath, and worked alongside Nasus to shield survivors from the devastation caused by the rogue Ascended. These alliances reflected her growing ability to lead and inspire others during times of crisis. Her courage in the face of such powerful adversaries solidified her role as a protector of her homeland.

Alliance with Kai’Sa

Taliyah’s sense of duty extended beyond her people. In her fight against the Void, she allied with Kai’Sa, a hunter of Voidborn creatures. Together, they defended a group of travelers from the Lamplights and faced down Rek’Sai and her Xer’Sai brood. Their teamwork showcased Taliyah’s capacity to adapt her powers in combat and rely on others’ strengths. The bond she formed with Kai’Sa was rooted in mutual respect and a shared determination to safeguard the vulnerable.

Abilities and Strengths of Taliyah

Taliyah’s mastery of earth magic reflects the Naasaj’s weaving traditions. She manipulates stone as if crafting a tapestry, creating walls, structures, and seismic shifts with remarkable precision. Her ability to sense the history locked within rocks adds a layer of depth to her magic, connecting her to Shurima’s past. This unique skill gives her a profound understanding of the land, enabling her to act as its guardian. Her connection to the earth is not just magical but deeply personal, tying her destiny to the world she strives to protect.

Key Relationships

Yasuo

Yasuo became the mentor Taliyah sought. Their relationship mirrors that of siblings, with Taliyah gifting him a handspun thread of Shuriman wool as a token of gratitude. This simple yet heartfelt gesture symbolized the bond they forged during their time together. Even after parting ways, Yasuo’s influence remains an integral part of her journey.

Sivir

When Taliyah encountered Sivir, she saw a wounded warrior in need of aid. Her decision to help Sivir showcased her unwavering empathy, even in the face of danger. Their alliance highlighted Taliyah’s ability to find strength in compassion and her determination to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

Kai’Sa

Her alliance with Kai’Sa against the Void demonstrated her adaptability and willingness to fight alongside others to protect the vulnerable. Despite their differing methods, the trust they developed proved invaluable during their battles. This partnership exemplified Taliyah’s belief in unity and the power of collaboration.

Taliyah’s Legacy

Taliyah’s story is one of growth, resilience, and compassion. From a frightened child to a determined Stoneweaver, she has become a symbol of Shurima’s enduring strength. Her journey reflects the struggles and triumphs of those who seek to master their own potential while protecting what they hold dear. As she continues to shape the world around her, Taliyah reminds us that even the gentlest soul can move mountains.
