Taric is a support champion in League of Legends known for his healing, stuns, and powerful team protection. His abilities scale with armor, and his late-game presence can swing team fights. This article breaks down how to play Taric effectively, what to watch for at different stages of the game, and how to deal with him as an opponent.

Taric’s Abilities

Bravado (Passive)

After casting an ability, Taric empowers his next two basic attacks. These attacks gain 100% bonus attack speed, deal bonus magic damage that scales with level and bonus armor, and reduce the cooldown of his basic abilities. This makes him strong in extended trades and helps cycle his healing and crowd control faster.

Starlight’s Touch (Q)

Starlight’s Touch heals Taric and nearby allies. The ability stores up to five charges, and Taric can consume all of them on cast. Each charge heals based on his ability power and a percentage of his maximum health. The charges refill over time or when Taric uses Bravado attacks. This healing can help you and your ADC get through the laning phase, but is costly in terms of mana early on, so it must be used carefully.

Bastion (W)

Bastion links Taric to an ally, giving both champions bonus armor based on Taric’s total armor. All of Taric’s abilities also cast from the linked ally’s position. When activated, Bastion grants a shield to Taric and the linked ally for a short duration. Only one ally can be linked at a time, so it's important to keep it on a high-value teammate, usually a carry.

Dazzle (E)

Dazzle is Taric’s primary form of crowd control. After a one-second wind-up, he fires a beam that stuns and damages enemies in a straight line. The beam also fires from his linked ally. The delay makes it easy to dodge, so timing and positioning are important. It pairs well with Flash for surprise initiations.

Cosmic Radiance (R)

Taric’s ultimate gives invulnerability to himself and all nearby allies. After a 2.5-second delay, they become immune to all damage for 2.5 seconds. This effect also occurs around the linked ally. It is a strong tool for turning fights, especially when timed just before an enemy engages with burst damage.

Strengths of Taric

  • Frequent healing: With Bravado, Taric can recharge and cast heals often.

  • Team protection: His ultimate stops any incoming damage.

  • Armor scaling: His spells become stronger as he builds tanky.

  • Dual-casting: Bastion allows casting from a distance.

Weaknesses of Taric

  • Telegraphed stun: Dazzle is easy to dodge without Flash.

  • Mana issues: Early game healing drains his mana fast.

  • Team-reliant: He can’t carry games if teammates fall behind.

  • No hard engage: He struggles to start fights without Flash.

Playing Taric in Early Game (0–15 min)

Taric’s early game can be weak into aggressive lanes. Try not to take small trades too often, especially against ranged poke supports, because Taric’s melee range makes him vulnerable. Use Bravado-enhanced attacks to recharge healing charges efficiently and avoid wasting mana. Look for early openings with your stun + Bastion to catch the enemy ADC off-guard.

Getting boots early improves your ability to move around the lane, making your stun far easier to hit. You’ll also be more effective in short skirmishes.

Playing Taric in Mid Game (15–25 min)

In the mid game, Taric becomes more useful as fights start to break out. Stick close to your team and avoid moving alone, since you’re an easy target when caught. When placing vision, bring a teammate with you if possible and avoid deep wards unless you know the enemy’s location.

Use Dazzle to catch out-of-position enemies with the help of your linked ally. Linking Bastion to your carry can help peel for them during fights. Alternatively, link to your frontline to look for a good engage with the use of Dazzle. Always have Cosmic Radiance ready when objectives like Dragon or Rift Herald are coming up, as one well-timed ult can win the fight.

Playing Taric in Late Game (25+ min)

Taric gains power in the late game. His heals are more effective, and his ultimate can turn full team fights. Always stay with your team and avoid face-checking bushes or warding alone. Keep vision on Baron and Dragon, and be ready to use Cosmic Radiance to protect your backline when fights break out.

Stick to your carries and peel for them using your stun, healing, and ultimate. You’re tankier now thanks to armor-based items, so you can take some hits while shielding and healing your teammates. The goal is to keep them alive and buy enough time for them to deal damage.

Power Spikes

At level 4, put a second point in Starlight's Touch in tough matchups, as this will improve healing output during trades and early skirmishes. Reaching level 6 gives access to Cosmic Radiance, allowing Taric to block incoming burst damage and protect his team. At level 9, your E will be maxed, meaning you'll be able to spam your stun with the use of Bravado. At level 11, the cooldown on Cosmic Radiance drops, which helps during frequent fights over objectives. By level 13, with two maxed abilities, Taric becomes a strong defensive presence in fights thanks to increased healing and stuns for peeling.

Counter Tips Against Taric

When laning against Taric, avoid standing near walls or in narrow areas. This gives you more room to dodge his Dazzle stun. Try to poke him early to drain his mana and reduce his healing. If he runs out of mana, he can't trade or sustain properly, giving you lane control.

During team fights, you can either burst a target down before Cosmic Radiance activates, or back off when you see it being cast. Watch Taric’s movement so you’re not caught off guard by a surprise Dazzle cast through his Bastion-linked ally. To reduce his healing, build anti-heal items like Executioner’s Calling.

Best Synergies With Taric

Taric works well with strong laning champions like Ashe, Sivir, or Lucian. Their oppressive lane presence can help Taric land stuns early on to look for a kill. He also pairs well with certain hyper carries like Twitch or Kog'Maw, as Taric's Cosmic Radiance can keep them alive during fights so they can deal maximum amounts of damage. Taric synergizes with engage-heavy junglers like Sejuani or Jarvan IV, where his stun and ultimate can follow up their crowd control.

Final Thoughts

Taric in League of Legends is a defensive support with the tools to protect, heal, and turn fights. While he can struggle early on into certain matchups and relies on mana, his mid to late game strength comes from shielding and keeping allies alive at key moments. If you use his cooldowns well, stay near your carry, and time your ultimate carefully, Taric can be the difference between a win and a loss.
