Team Secret Announces End Of Dota 2 Roster
If you're a Dota 2 fan, you might have noticed the lack of Team Secret in recent tournaments. The organization last appeared in the middle of 2025, competing for several qualifiers but failing to make it far in any of them. And today the organization revealed that it will go on hiatus for now.
While not shutting the door completely on Dota 2, Secret announced that they are no longer seeking a new roster. Instead, the organization will take a break from the scene.
What happened to Team Secret?
Let's go over the last three years of Team Secret. In 2022, things were looking bright. A second place finish at The International after a surprise last chance qualifiers gave fans hope. Secret was back after a relatively quiet year. But that hope didn't last long.
After The International ended, Secret went through a massive roster shuffle. Only Clement "Puppey" Ivanov remained on the squad, and while he managed to rebuild from scratch multiple times in the past, it proved a little too difficult in 2023.
Still, 2023 wasn't a disaster for Team Secret. They earned a reasonable sum of USD $300,000 from Riyadh Masters, and attended ESL One Kuala Lumpur at the end of the year. A big drop from second place at TI, but a solid year for most organizations.
However, things got worse after that. Despite making it to three prestigious events in 2024, Secret couldn't crack top eight in any of them. The team continued to make roster shuffles, hoping to find some new magic that would work but to no avail. And things did not improve after that either.
It was a slow death for Team Secret, taking three years but in the end, the organization decided it simply can't take any more losses and put a lid on their Dota 2 dream.
Team Secret's biggest achievements in Dota 2
Climbing the TI ladder
While Team Secret never got their hands on the coveted Aegis, they showcased incredible growth over four years. In 2018 they reached top six, it was top four the year after, 2021 saw a bronze medal for the squad, and finally a silver for Team Secret in 2022.
Over just those four International appearances, Team Secret accrued over USD $ 9,000,000. Not a small sum at all, and solidifying them as a highly successful organization at the time.
Winners of the Shanghai Super Major
Back in 2016, Valve wanted to establish a Dota 2 competitive scene that didn't focus purely on The International. They had three massive tournaments, dubbed the Super Majors that year. Each with a whooping three-million dollar prize pool.
Team Secret excelled in that format, securing second place in Frankfurt. But it was their victory in Shanghai that set the Dota world ablaze. Beating Team Liquid 3-1 in a fantastic grand final. It was also an iconic Dota 2 roster at the time, with Jacky "EternaLEnVy" Mao, Aliwi "w33" Omar, Rasmus "MISERY" Filipsen, and Johan "pieliedie" Åström on the squad.
Dominated the 2019-2020 Dota 2 seasons
In 2019 Team Secret was on a roll, they won four tournaments in a row, two of them being ESL One Lans, while the other two were Majors. The team looked unstoppable, although a fourth place finish at TI put a slight damper on things.
The ball was in full force again in 2020. Team Secret took NINE consecutive first place finishes across multiple Dota 2 events. Granted a couple of those events were slightly smaller in scale, but they were taking down the likes of OG, Nigma, and Team Liquid in clean 3-0 finals.
Team Secret had a long and very successful career in the world of Dota 2. It's always a shame to see any team leave the scene but here's hoping this is a temporaroy hiatus only, and we see the resurgence of the squad in the near future.
