Shopify Rebellion Enters Dota 2 With Former EG Roster and SabeRLight
After Evil Geniuses announced their decision to leave North America and build a South American Dota 2 roster, many were wondering what would happen to the players.
One of them, Egor “Nightfall” Grigorenko, decided to return to Eastern Europe and join one of the strongest teams in the region: BetBoom Esports. But nobody knew what the other four were going to do. Well, now we know.
Shopify and Shopify Rebellion
Shopify is a huge company with more than 10.000 employees. Its founder, Tobias “Tobi” Lutke, is as rich as Gabe Newell and a StarCraft 2 enthusiast. So he was probably eager to acquire the former EG roster and have his brand represented in Dota 2. That’s how Shopify Rebellion was born.

Practically, Evil Geniuses will continue to play in North America under a different name. But who’s the fifth player on the roster, who has replaced Nightfall?
Jonas “SabeRLight-” is one of the best position 3 players in North America. He used to compete for TSM and was supposed to play for the team in 2023. But when you have giants like Shopify looking for players, it’s hard to keep your superstars. The offers are simply too good.
Of course, we don’t know how much money SabeRLight- received for his last-second “betrayal”, but he probably received a generous offer that he couldn’t refuse.
Furthermore, the opportunity to compete alongside Artour “Arteezy” Babaev and Tal “Fly” Aizik probably made SabeRLight very excited to join Rebellion regardless of how much he was offered.
In 2023, this organization has no rival in North America. TSM’s roster was greatly weakened by SabeRLight’s leave and Quincy Crew are nowhere near their former strength after the departure of Quinn “Quinn” Callahan.
There’s only one serious team in the region and this means that Shopify Rebellion will go to all the Majors and TI12 for sure.
