Kortifex the Deathless stands as one of the most powerful and feared beings in Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies. Known for his cruelty and ambition, he embodies the destructive energy of the Dark Aether. His story ties ancient gods, human greed, and supernatural warfare into one of the darkest chapters in Call of Duty lore.

This article explores the life, power, and downfall of Kortifex, detailing his role as an Elder God, his connection to humanity, and how his reign shaped the undead war.

Origins of Kortifex the Deathless

The Dark Aether and the Elder Gods

Kortifex was born into the royal bloodline of the Dark Aether, a dimension filled with godlike beings and endless conflict. He ruled beside his wife, Saraxis, but his rule was marred by cruelty and betrayal. Unlike many of his kin, Kortifex sought power through domination rather than unity.

He rejected the idea of having an heir, as his clan’s history was stained by murder and betrayal. When Saraxis bore a child against his wishes, Kortifex punished her mercilessly. He erased her memories, forced her to wear the mask of the Sisters of Agony, and condemned their child to an unknown fate. These acts cemented his reputation as a heartless tyrant among the Elder Gods.

The Netherwars and Kortifex’s Rise

Kortifex’s hunger for control led him to start the Netherwars, a massive conflict within the Dark Aether. Alongside Norticus the Conqueror, he attempted to seize the entire realm. His early victories were brutal and swift. He transformed entire regions—like the Wilds of the Dark Aether—into corrupted wastelands.

But his cruelty became his weakness. Many gods who once served him turned against him, forming a resistance. This alliance included Saraxis, Bellekar, Inviktor the Destroyer, and Vercanna the Last. As they united, Kortifex’s empire began to crumble. Betrayed by Norticus and defeated in battle, Kortifex was trapped within his own artifact, sealing his essence away for centuries.

The Awakening During World War II

Bonding with Wolfram Von List

Centuries later, the artifact containing Kortifex was discovered by the Schutzstaffel (SS) during World War II. It came into the hands of Wolfram Von List, an ambitious Oberführer. The artifact bonded with Von List, giving him the power to raise armies of the dead.

When Nazi scientists at Projekt Endstation breached the barrier between dimensions, the Dark Aether merged briefly with Earth. Kortifex saw this as his chance to reclaim influence. Through Von List, he created undead legions across Europe and Asia—commanding them to fight for the Third Reich.

Kortifex’s manipulation of Von List revealed his cunning nature. He flattered the Oberführer with talk of shared power, calling him a “worthy vessel,” but saw him only as a tool for revenge. Kortifex viewed mortals as disposable instruments, valuable only when they served his purpose.

The Resistance and the Tome of Rituals

As Kortifex’s undead armies spread, Allied operatives joined forces with Professor Gabriel Krafft, who had been imprisoned by Von List. Together with other surviving deities—Bellekar, Vercanna, and Inviktor—they began searching for a way to separate Kortifex from his host.

Using mystical knowledge from the Tome of Rituals, they learned of a method to break his connection. Their quest led them from the ruins of Stalingrad to the deserts of Egypt, where Kortifex continued to challenge them through his servants, including Zaballa the Deceiver, an assassin from his Sisters of Agony.

Kortifex remained confident, even mocking his enemies for thinking they could resist him. His arrogance blinded him to the growing unity of his opponents—a fatal echo of his earlier defeat in the Netherwars.

The Shi No Numa Expedition

Shi No Numa

The Special Forces eventually traveled to Shi No Numa, a swamp haunted by relics tied to the Dark Aether. Here, they recovered the Relic Mirror, which restored Saraxis’s lost memories. Kortifex, aware of their progress, taunted Von List and Zaballa, hinting that every move they made was part of his plan.

When Zaballa questioned his strategy, Kortifex responded coldly, saying he “doesn’t do forgiveness.” His cruelty extended even to his most loyal servants. Despite claiming control, cracks in his power began to show as the operatives grew stronger and the rift between him and Von List widened.

Becoming the Archon

The Final Battle

Kortifex’s ambition peaked when he sought the power of the Construct, an ancient Dark Aether entity capable of reshaping dimensions. After Von List’s army collapsed, Kortifex abandoned his host and aimed to become the Construct’s Archon—a supreme being of chaos and destruction.

However, the Special Forces arrived before he could complete his ascension. Following the Construct’s rules, they faced three trials—Sacrifice, Mindfulness, and Resilience. Against all odds, the humans succeeded.

The Construct granted Kortifex the title of Archon, but his triumph was short-lived. The Special Forces fought him in a massive final battle. With the help of other Elder Gods, they stripped Kortifex of his powers. Norticus declared, “Death has finally come for Kortifex the Deathless,” as his body was consumed by the depths of the Dark Aether.

The Legacy of Kortifex

Though destroyed, Kortifex’s shadow lingered over history. Decades later, Colonel Lev Kravchenko mentioned him during an interrogation of Hugo Jager, a descendant of Von List. Before Kravchenko could finish naming Kortifex, Jager warned him to stop—showing that even after death, the name of Kortifex still inspired fear.

Records like “Rhodes File 118” in Project Janus referenced his existence as late as 1991, suggesting that traces of the Dark Aether’s corruption continued to haunt the mortal realm.

The Personality of a Tyrant

Kortifex was described by his former ally Norticus as “a cruel master” who inspired neither loyalty nor love. He viewed strength and control as absolute virtues and saw mercy as weakness. His relationship with Saraxis showed that he once felt affection, but power and pride consumed whatever humanity he possessed.

He called Earth “a pathetic ball of dust” and treated humanity as insects. Despite this, his obsession with domination drew him toward human affairs, using mortals like Von List to wage wars in his name. Kortifex’s contradiction—disdain for mortals yet reliance on them—made him a uniquely tragic villain.

Conclusion

Kortifex’s story is one of endless ambition turned to ruin. From his royal birth in the Dark Aether to his fall as the Archon, his life illustrates the cost of power without empathy. He destroyed allies, enslaved mortals, and challenged gods, only to be undone by his own arrogance.

Though the Special Forces ended his reign, the legacy of Kortifex the Deathless continues as a reminder of the darkness that power can breed—both in gods and in men.
